The europhile Independent newspaper has published a letter today (30.8.2006) from the heads of Centrica (the energy supplier), Merrill Lynch and Sainsbury calling for unlimited immigration when Bulgaria and Romania join the EU.
Sainsbury head Philip Hampton  (who signed the letter to the Independent which was sent to the newspaper on behalf of the pro-EU ‘New Europe’ group) said that eastern european workers “are typically young, motivated and economically active.” In other words, cheaper to employ than British-born workers and easier to boss around (or sack). Shouldn’t someone up at the top of UKIP be writing to the Sainsbury shareholders complaining about this man Hampton? |

The Independent is trying to carve itself a "voice of opposition" to all the other papers, that are going in the opposite way.
Though I have to admit, I never expected them to take the corporate line of wanting cheap labour at all costs.

As for them so often taking the opposite line of all the other 'papers - well, I'm pleased to say this crass 'individualism' has done them little good - the europhile low circulation so-called 'Independent' is selling far fewer copies than a decade ago  . |

The following bosses (all members of the europhile ‘Business for a New Europe’ – BNEG advisory council) – who signed a letter to the europhile so-called ‘Independent’ newspaper today (30.8.2006) in support of unlimited immigration from Bulgaria and Romania (from the time they join the EU in 2007 and onwards) to the UK – said (as on the front page of today’s ‘Independent’:
Bob Wigley (BNEG advisory council member), Chairman of the Wall Street (USA) investment bank, Merrill Lynch, said “The UK is essentially a collection of immigrants and has been enriched in many ways by their contribution. Immigration is a very powerful factor in providing the energy for our continued growth.” Philip Hampton (BNEG advisory council member), Chairman of Sainsbury’s, stated “Contrary to some caricatures of immigrants – very few have claimed state benefit.” Martin Sorrell (BNEG advisory council member), Chief Executive of the large advertising company WPP, commented “The Polish plumber has become a much-loved feature of British life.” Roger Carr, Chairman of Centrica (owner of British Gas and a BNEG advisory council member) stated “I have always believed in open markets. You cannot be selective of the elements you embrace or reject.” Vijay Patel, Chief Executive of Waymade Healthcare (BNEG advisory council member), said “As a member of the Asian business community I celebrate the contribution made by previous immigrant groups and I believe that further immigration will continue to stimulate our economic growth and entrepreneurial spirit.” The biased pro-EU ‘Independent’ said (on its front page today) that the Carphone Warehouse, Alliance Boots, BP and the National Grid Power Company also back ‘Business New Europe’ (and, by implication, unlimited immigration from eastern europe including Romania and Bulgaria. Ed Balls MP (an ally of Chancellor Gordon Brown) and the (pro-Blair) europhile Scot Alistair Darling MP (who is in charge of English transport but can’t even vote on Scottish transport which is dealt with in Edinburgh) have talked of “managing immigration from Bulgaria and Romania” (Darling) and of “proper controls” (Ed Balls). Anthony Ullman, Chairman of the Business for a New Europe entrepreneurs’ council said (according to the Independent) “the free movement of labour is a huge boon allowing people in the UK to seek jobs in the EU.” David Frost (not the broadcaster), Chairman of the British Chamber of Commerce, said “We don’t want migrant labour to support the great number of local people who haven’t got jobs. Unemployment (in the UK) is now at a six-year high.” Britannist writes: What daft statements from the members of the Business for a New Europe front organisation for the EU. Ullman (above) talks of the free movement of labour. First of all, there were free movement of labour agreements between the UK and other countries long before we joined the EEC (now EU). Secondly the number of UK workers in EU nations is miniscule compared to those from the EU working inside the UK. Carr makes the absurd statement that you can’t pick and choose which migrants are good for the economy and country. Hampton claims migrants hardly make claims on our benefits system. Wrong. At least 40, 000 east europeans are and more will do so in the future. Sorrell says the Polish plumber is a much-loved part of British national life. I hardly think so. There are actually only 156 Polish Plumbers in the UK out of 620, 000 eastern european migrants who have come here since 1.5.2004. Wigley says the UK is a collection of immigrants. No more so than any other ‘old’ country in the world. Of the people of England, 95% share the same genes/ancestral origins are those who populated England 1000 years ago. Is it not time to start drawing up a list of pro-EU companies to boycott? Or if not boycott, to get someone up at the top of UKIP to write and complain to the company shareholders and give the real fact about the long-term financial and social costs of accepting millions of continental EU people into our crowded land? |

I have been boycotting Sainsbury for some time now, over their donations to the Labour party.
This has just given me even more reason to do so.

Of course Sainsbury wants unlimited immigration - cheap labour to stack shelves. Furthermore, as people are forced by high land prices to live in flats so won't have the land to grow their own produce, they will be more dependent on supermarkets.

Here's a more detailed list of supporters of the BNEG - it's time we started working on drawing up a full list of all europhiles so we can begin organising some sort of boycott:
Supporters of the europhile Business for a New Europe Group - Lord (Leon) Brittan (Europhile, ex-‘Conservative’ minister and former EU Comissioner and Vice chairman, UBS); (financial) Roger Carr (Chairman, Centrica); (gas and electricity supplier) Richard Cousins (Chief Executive, Compass); (food processing) Guy Dawson (Founding Partner, Tricorn Partners); (financial) Charles Dunstone (Chief Executive, Carphone Warehouse); (mobile telephones) Niall FitzGerald (Chairman, Reuters); (news media) Chris Gibson-Smith (Chairman, The London Stock Exchange); Philip Hampton (Chairman, Sainsbury); (supermarket chain) David Levin (Chief Executive, United Business Media); (media/publisher) Sir John Parker (Chairman, National Grid); (energy distribution) Vijay Patel (Chief Executive, Waymade Healthcare); (medical) Stuart Popham (Senior Partner, Clifford Chance); (legal) Mike Rake (Chairman, KPMG International); (accountants) Sir Nigel Rudd (Chairman, Boots); (shop chain/chemists) Bryan Sanderson (Chairman, Standard Chartered); (financial) Sir Martin Sorrell (Chief Executive, WPP); (advertising) Peter Sutherland (Chairman, BP); (oil) Rosemary Thorne (Finance director, Ladbrokes); (betting) Lord (Christopher) Tugendhat (Europhile and Chairman, European Advisory Board, Lehman Brothers); (financial) ’Bob’ Wigley (Chairman, Europe, Middle East & Africa, Merrill Lynch), (financial) |

As everyone knows, the Co-op is affiliated to the Labour Party (and is a full political party known as the Co-operative Party with an extreme europhile manifesto that would win the approval of Mandelson) - so one should avoid it if possible. In view of Blair being discredited and Brown's reputation for raising taxes on large businesses, how much longer the cash-strapped Lie-bour Party can rely on donations from certain supermarket chains is now the big question. |

I think it is high time we had some form of shareholder reform of these plcs. The executives all sit on each others board paying themselves cash bonuses even when they turn out to be monumental failures. I'm all in favour of entrepreneurial activity but I am very concerned with corporate malpractice. In twenty years time we will have vast loads of pensioners with sod all from their companies, because most executives took the Maxwell route and either raided the funds or said they couldn't afford to keep them going.
We are all so crazy on this issue!! |

Corporations, like political parties or any other organisation of humans, have the potential for corrupt leaders and abuse of power.
The bigger they are, the more potential. However, it's down to the shareholders to hold them to account. If as a shareholder you don't feel you have any power, then sell your shares.
