There will be significant problems if British companies keep hiring eastern european workers in preference to (instead of) their unskilled British counterparts, David Frost, Secretary-General of the British Chamber of Commerce said on 24.7.2006.
Mr. Frost warned (in an article for the Financial Times newspaper) “Thousands of (British) young people will be on the (employment) scrap heap. The Government should drop its divisive and elitist focus on academic achievements. East europeans have a higher level of skills, enthusiasm, are more committed and have a far better attitude than local people to work. Many bosses prefer east europeans. We could be storing up significant social problems – especially in urban areas if we assign the large number of young people with no qualifications and now work ethic to the scrap heap.” The Daily Mail edition of 25.7.2006 reported that the manager at Guildford Timber Frame in (West) Sussex had said that “the productivity of eastern european workers is awesome.” An employment consultant, Malcolm Graham-Wood, recalled “An eastern european worker hurt his finger on a nail. He was taken to hospital and was back working within an hour and a half apologising for the time off. If that had been an English worker, s/he would have taken a fortnight off.” A report for the Confederation of British Industry recently said that school leavers in the UK are not ready for the world of work and a third of employers are not satisfied with their basic literary and numeracy skills. First Group, the largest bus company in the UK, has just taken on its 1000th eastern european bus driver, the Daily Mail reported. Unemployment has shot up in the UK over the last 12 months by 220, 000 and is now, officially, 1.6 million. There are now over 600, 000 eastern europeans in the UK. Before eight eastern european nations entered the EU on 1.5.2004 the deceitful europhile Blair Labour Government forecast that no more than 8, 000 to 13, 000 eastern europeans would come to the UK in the first year their nations were in the EU. But well over 300, 000 actually arrived in the UK in the period 1.5.2004 to 1.5.2005. Research shows that a significant number are still here with many Poles saying they intend to remain in the UK for at least two years. There are thought to be at least 10, 000 eastern europeans in Slough and another 10, 000 in Bedford, with thousands more in Crewe (all towns with populations of about 60, 000). It just isn't true. Some people will be lazy basts (and will vote Labour). Some Eastern Europeans will be to. However, because the Eastern Euorpeans have made an effort to come here, they may well be more likely to want to actually work. That, or continue their criminal activities in a richer land, if they are that way inclined. You don't brand them all criminals, like this pratt labled all British people lazy.

I agree. The overwhelming majority of British people work very hard. That's why the Japanese like to invest in the UK and one of the reasons why British companies are being purchased by overseas buyers.
As covered elsewhere in the forum, the Home Office is said to be "very concerned" at the arrival of "undesirables" from Bulgaria and Romania. |
