Immigration controls ‘inadequate’: The UK’s immigration enforcement measures are “clearly inadequate” and need overhauling to take into account a completely changed landscape, says MP’s. A parliamentary report calls for employers of illegal immigrants to be targeted in an effort to build public confidence in the system. The Home Affairs select committee said officials needed to place a “new emphasis” on enforcement controls. The Home Office said it welcomed the report and shared some of its analysis. From BBC 1 Television Ceefax page 108 (analogue) 23.7.06 at 1.56 pm: Reid plans border-control force: A uniformed border-control force is to be introduced at ports and airports for the first time in the UK, Home Secretary John Reid has said. The budget for immigration enforcement will also double to £280 million by the end of 2010, Home Office sources told the BBC. A Refugee Council spokesman said the money would be better spent on training asylum case workers than border police. Details of the plans emerged as a report by MP’s condemned current enforcement measures as “inadequate”. |
