Default Wider, but deeper too

What is more worrying is the increasingly chauvinistic tone adopted by the British media in discussing the further enlargement of the European Union to 27 and more members. For example the hectoring tone adopted by Jeremy Paxman on Newsnight on Tuesday when interviewing the new minister for European Affairs, Geoff Hoon, about the consequences of admitting Bulgaria and Romania for migration to the UK would not have disgraced UKIP or the BNP.

Indeed Paxman's protracted tirade about "out of control migration" from the new EU countries achieved something I would have thought impossible - to leave me feeling sympathy with Iraq warrier Hoon. One would never have imagined that the evidence thus far is that those EU countries which have been most open in admitting workers from the new EU countries have grown faster and created more jobs than those who have kept the door shut.

How dare Paxman voice what a majority of the British people are now saying.

Sorry I do not agree with Paxman. He is mixing up 2 facets of the situation, legal immigration and illegal immigration/asylum seekers.
It is very clear that the UK has benefitted from the influx of workers from East Europe they are NOT a drain on the economy, they have added value to it , they do NOT live off social welfare, they pay taxes . The point is that because they are here legally they have no need to hide away, take jobs at below the minimum wage , commit crimes. Their objective is to work hard, earn money ,not get into trouble and go home. Their culture is similar to ours and the Poles,Hungarians, Czechs and the others who have immigrated to this country have all proven to be good citizens
Illegal immigrants and asylum seekers who have overstayed their welcome are the other side of the coin and these are the people that this Government has signally failed to deal with

I think Paxman is right. It is out of control, because there is no control.

I understand that there are winners and losers in that situation, but if you go and ask the man on the street, they tend to not be overly happy had the sheer volume of numbers.

If Britain didn't have 1 in 4 people working for the government and I didn't pay more in tax than I actually earned (all things considered), then maybe I would be more open to the idea that Britain had a thriving economy, desperate for workers that it can't provide.

That is clearly not the case and there isn't a hell of a lot you can say to prove it to me otherwise.

That depends who you are if you own a business and you want cheap labour it is great but if you are someone looking for a job at was a British rate you would think different.

Ask plumbers and electricians if these immigrant workers are competing at a fair rate for someone who lives in this country.

From my understanding they work very hard but spend very little of their money in this country, hardly helping our economy. They send money back and when they return they can live like kings for months on what they have saved.

And as for the argument they fill all of the jobs that the British don’t want to do this is just hogwash, I have been going down Devon and Cornwall for the last 15 years now why is it last year every Road Chef I stopped at employed eastern Europeans every campsite I stopped at had cleaners and bar staff that were eastern European, these jobs had previously been done by British workers or students.

And if there were all these jobs that businesses could not fill I take it they all went bust.
