I'm not convinced by Golitsyn. I read 'new lies for old' some time ago. Saying that 94% of his predictions came true is a bit misleading, as he never predicted the demise of the Soviet Union at all.
His arguments would be convincing if it weren't for the fact that the Soviet Union was on a fairly constant downward slope in economic and social terms from the 1950s onwards. Socially, they had long-running problems with everything from alcohol and drug-abuse to organised crime etc. IMO, the Soviet Union was a totally broken society towards the end of its existence. Economically, it's needless to say that they spent themselves into the ground on defence etc. Personally, if Alexander Solzhenitsyn is convinced by the new Russia, then it's good enough for me ![]()
