BBC NEWS | England | Oxfordshire | Tory candidate chosen for Henley
An Oxfordshire councillor has been selected by the Conservatives to fight the Henley by-election when London Mayor Boris Johnson steps down as MP. John Howell, a former partner at City accountant Ernst and Young, was chosen from a shortlist of three. Mr Howell said it was a "huge privilege" to have been selected for the Oxfordshire constituency. New London mayor Boris Johnson is yet to formally stand down from his seat, which he has held since 2001. A cabinet member on Oxfordshire County Council, Mr Howell was made an OBE in 2000. The Tories said he would be a champion for the constituency. "A successful businessman, he is leading the way in ensuring the county council is run more efficiently and in opposing the bulldozing of the green belt," a spokesman said.

The LibDems have chosen an apparatchik from Somerset.
Bad move. I would not have expected that from them. Either pick a nationally known figure or a local with decent profile in the constituency. They had a chance of doing well. I think they have buggered that up. That could help us. |

Expect the Blue Crew in all their glory; branches are going to get bussed in from all over the country to defend this one. You can, of course, point out to the electorate that excessive use of canvassers means the Tories are aware UKIP are the real opposition, but this IS Boris's seat we're talking about.
Let's face it, they've bussed in local branches to keep Cameron's councils blue; this is the least you can expect in a By-election this important to them. |

Well,if your formula is correct and so easy Chikrodah,UKIP should be doing the same a little further down the line to keep us fresh in the minds of the electorate, hope Steve Allison has clicked on to this idea.
A huge, one day hit by activists must work out a lot cheaper and easier to organise as well. |

I speak from experience. The Tories won't stick to a "huge, one day hit". They'll have activists, employees and CCO staff out on a daily basis once this one is announced. They'll have shifts of loyal supporters at every single polling station come polling day. They'll have canvassers knocking every single door, possibly twice. They'll have professional leaflets. They'll have Cameron and Boris out in force supporting their man. They'll do their best to ferry every single voter without transport to their nearest polling booth. The Labour party will do the same, no doubt with a similar brand of spin to that trotted out at Crewe and Nantwich. H, I'm not being negative, I'm being realistic. You can't plan a successful campaign if you don't know what you're up against. I'm hoping Chris wins his deposit on this one; there seems little reason why he shouldn't. |

Chikrodah,I was relating to the formula of a swift, one day hit, close to election day, maybe 10 days before it,or less,it must be cheaper and easier to organise, and, let us face it,we will only be making a guest appearance with no chance of winning, third would be good though.
By the by,are the bnp Snowclones putting anyone up in this one, anybody know? It never entered my head that you were being negative, such thoughts are behind me now. As for your second last sentence, you lost me with that one. |

I must admit it would be fun to see the effect of hundreds of UKIP supporters descending on Henley on a Saturday morning
![]() Nikki Sinclaire, IIRC, orgainised a coachload of UKIPpers for the demo outside parliament. It seems reasonable to suppose something similar could be organised for Henley. |

Yes,I agree, there is still plenty of time left to organise a one day big hit by UKIP.
I hear that this election is now going to be on the 26th June,do you know if that is correct,or is someone blowing smoke up my nose again? |
