What's the chance of the public or the media ever being clear about the difference between the Liberals and the Liberal-Democrats? Very slight.

Agreed. Wishful thinking on Tom's part I fear, although I would much prefer to see a Liberal Party candidate outperform a Liberal Democrat one. Also, any votes the Liberal Party get would merely split both the anti-Tory vote and that of the anti-EU parties contesting the seat. Having said that whoever stands for the Tories is bound to get in.

Smile A couple of helpful suggestions for UKIP!

If UKIP is going to be serious about a possible Henley by-election I'd suggest two options.

1. Nigel Farage is the candidate and starts a high profile campaign (no backsliders wanted!)

2. An open primary is conducted in Henley where the voters get to choose the candidate (not just ukippers!). This will create advance publicity.

Just a thought!

NF shouldn't be the candidate as it will make us look more like a one man party than ever. He fought Bromley, where he has a lot of connections; he shouldn't fight Henley where it is possible he has none.

Nobody who is already adopted as a candidate for another constituency should be allowed, as it will look like carpet bagging on their part.

Open primaries are expensive, but it would certainly get publicity.

UKIP needs a dedicated team of experienced campaigners for by-elections like this, its no good relying on some dedicated members getting together on the chance of pulling off a shock result.

It just doesn't happen like that.

We have dedicated members, let's utilise them in our cause whenever possible.

At Bromley Nigel said he would be happy to come a good second. What makes you think we want a candidate who is happy to loose and goes into a by election saying he would be happy to loose?
