The closure and bankruptcy of a Scottish bank just before the by-election would have been a problem for Labour. The discussion in the Scotsman suggests that Salmond has no economic policy other than to save Scottish jobs at all costs. He actually claims he would have saved the bank. It would still have had its HQ in Halifax, but what the hell when a good sound bite is required.

The deal might be subjected to competition laws as it transpires that the discussions over Lloyds purchase were started before the collapse of the share price and were based on sound economics. The plan to cut 10s of thousands of duplicated jobs was always part of the negotiations. Perhaps it will turn out that the share fall was started deliberately to ease the purchase through and avoid competition laws as it ostensibly looks like the move was to 'save' the banking sector (as if they can't look after themselves).

There's a suggestion it will be referred to the EU courts.
