fellow traveller, You are probably correct.

A week is a long time in politics and last week must have been one of the longest weeks for the SNP. A policy of independence based on the strength of Scotland's financial institutions is flawed when the real value of those institutions is seen to be a fraction of what it was when the policy was announced. The fact that Salmond has now turned to the UK and asked for assistance in underwriting his local authorities' investments in failed Icelandic banks (within the arc of prosperity he seeks to join) means that he has ducked an issue. Local government finance is a devolved responsibility, but financial regulation is UK based. Salmond is hoist by his own petard. He seeks UK taxpayers' support for his local government finances.

House sales in Scotland are based on a different system to England and Wales. 75% of houses are not making asking price and many people are losing 20% or more on the price of their homes. The Scotsman has 38000 job losses forecast for the next year.

The by-election could go either way. It will not however go UKIP's way. UKIP will be lucky to make 3 figures.

Still, it is an important election. Labour have a huge majority in this area, some 10 000 odd votes, but going on how well the SNP are doing it might just be possible they gain the seat. If they do then we will be back on the leadership business with Nu Labour. Then if we are very lucky that will bring the general election forward, something that really needs to happen. So this election is more about the fate of the country as a whole, and the UKIP would be wise to be seen to be involved, because it will get a lot of media attention. Long term this could benefit the UKIP.

BvL, I don't share your optimism. If UKIP get 50 or so votes, which is highly likely in a 2 horse race with all to play for, we will not be seen as credible in a GE north of the border. The Tories must be dreading losing their deposit and possibly coming 4th or 5th. UKIP will be behind Labour, SNP, LibDem, Tory, Green, SSP and possibly any local independents or breakaway socialists. If we do better than 6th I will be pleasantly surprised.

Kris Seunarine got 32 votes in ward 23. Labours Heartland. Very popular independant councillor Rodger takes up most of the non labour votes. So may not be fully representative of support

Very creditable 12th out of 13.

STV allows people to indulge themselves. The omens are not good.

Good luck to UKIP's Kris SEUNARINE!

The others can go and boil their heads.
