What the newspapers have been saying about Yellow Brown's decision to avoid a November 2007 General Election:

"Brown bottles it" - Mail on Sunday and Independent on Sunday 7.10.2007 "Brown will pay a high price for his cynical game" - Mail on Sunday 7.10.2007 "We killed the General Election 2007 with our opinion poll showing Gordon Brown would lose his majority - he has squandered the political capital he has gained since taking over from Blair" - News of the World 7.10.2007 "From sure-footed statesman to nervous wreck" - John Rentoul, columnist, in the Independent on Sunday 7.10.2007 "Brown is facing a full-blown crisis and will pay for his unwise gamble" - Observer 7.10.2007. And just you wait until the economy goes properly tits up!
Unemployment rising, groaning high street, property prices in a flat spin! It won't be good for Gordy!

If I were him, I would have gone for it. Yes, it would have been a big risk but waiting is surely going to prove to be a bigger one? If he was worried about Scotland then all he could have said to them was do you want the Labour Party or the Tories? That would probably have held off the SNP for the most part.

Gordon Brown will end up like his predecessor Blair, more PR than PM.
Grab a headline? "I'll visit Iraq"/ "I'll find a hospital to open"/ "I'll whip up suport for an election and try to wrongfoot the Tories"/I'll pretend I'm a statesman/ "I'll blame the media". History will judge Brown as a ditherer-not cautious-,and hopefully he will be a short-term PM who makes the same mistake as Callaghan did. |
