Default Kevin Maguire, Tory, Blackpool, Conservatives, General Election

Brief edited extract from the article by Kevin Maguire on the link in the last posting to this thread:

"The Tory huddle in Blackpool is a conference of fear, a gathering of a once mighty political tribe that's terrified of extinction. This week's strategy isn't to win an early General Election because David Cameron, now physically thin as well as a lightweight, realises that's difficult. As one shadow minister close to the Tory leader whispered... the Conservatives might not survive another five years in the wilderness."

The Conservatives want to try to stop Gordon Brown from calling an early General Election, Kevin Maguire claims (who adds that an early General Election could "backfire spectacularly" on Gordon Brown and he should not call one).

Britannist adds: The earliest date a General Election could now be called is for 1st of November, 2007.

The one feature that does not feature in this article is that, by not calling a GE until it is necessary, Brown will have to face down the mounting pressure for a referendum on the 'amended' EU Constitution. If he calls a GE with a manifesto which includes signing up to the amendments and wins - the pressure for a referendum departs. Might be the only way he can get through without serious compromise - something which his vanity would abhor!

I don't think there will be an Election called for this year by Brown, regardless of how many time that fool Camoron calls for one.

The CONS would be beaten out of site and UKIP would be in deep trouble because we have no plan or strategy in place to go into action at very short notice.

The europhile Scottish so-called 'National' Party (SNP) is doing well in opinion polls and is well ahead of Labour. This must also be a factor in the decision of Gordon Brown on whether to call an early General Election or not.

He would need to be sure that Labour would make more overall gains in England than the number of seat losses Labour might suffer to the SNP in Scotland.

Default 'Tony' Benn, EU, General Election, Sir Malcolm Rifkind, Conservative

Former Labour Government Minister 'Tony' Benn, an opponent of UK membership of the EU, is allegedly thinking of standing at the next General Election (and may contest the seat where pro-EU Sir Malcolm Rifkind MP has been selected as the Conservative candidate):

'Tony' Benn may stand against well known Conservative ex-Minister at next Election
