Brief extract from the above article (on the link in the first posting to this thread):
"Growing numbers of Cabinet ministers and Labour MPs are urging Mr Brown to “strike while the iron is hot”. They fear Labour’s lead in the polls could vanish if Britain is hit by an economic downturn next year." |

Let's hope the iron comes back to scorch their buttocks! Oh, how mean! But I really do think that this New Labour government has performed just like a dodgy cake. All fine icing on top but the cake itself is full of stale crumbs and rotting fruit!

Do you think, Arden, that many voters will recognise that if Brown goes for early election that he could be 'cutting and running' before bad economic news might hit the headlines? I think alot will - 57% don't want an early election a poll said the other day.
Another poll a few days ago revealed that Brown's potential lead over the Conservatives of 17% - if he agrees to a referendum on the EU 'Treaty' - would drop to just 1% if he refuses to hold a referendum on it. Not exactly encouraging news for him if he intends to go into an early election denying us a direct say on the EU 'Treaty'. |

Yes, I agree that most will think he will be in a cut and run position. His problem is that he's up against what Harold Macmillan once remarked "Events, dear boy. Events". This was when things were getting tough.
Blair had it quite good on the economic front. Between Brown and Steady Eddie/Unswervin' Mervyn, interest rates have allowed the economy to be fuelled on vast quantities of credit. Guess what? We've got an ex-council house going on sale in Solihull for £310,000!!! Who helped to inflate that value? I bet 99% of stuff sold in Argos is made in China! Nothing I see is made here in the UK apart from hand-made products going to people who can afford the odd item that way. Then we get the run on Northern Rock. And all the other things happening. The next election, whether tomorrow or in four years time, will be between those who sailed through the New Labour years and don't care or didn't get hit, and those who would like to get their hands on the buggers! |

And don't forget that the credit problem isn't just in the private sector. Labour has mortgaged the entire public infrastructure via PFI deals that lock us into vastly inflated repayments for the next 20 odd years.
