I see that Debbie Le May, FEP Director of Communications, is a councillor on Buntingford Town Council, East Hertfordshire. She was last elected in May 2007, as an Independent. Does she still sit as an Independent or is she now officially a Free England Party councillor?
Does anyone know of any other FEP members who are councillors? If so do they sit as FEP? |

The party was founded in February 2008 and we did not win any of the three English local elections we stood in this May. So to date the party does not have an elected councillor.
As local elections will be at the core of the party's electoral strategy for several years, we are looking for suitable by-elections to stand in. I confirm that Debbie is a councillor, who was elected as an Independent, and accordingly should so remain. If an English nationalist spots a by-election and thinks we should stand, please contact the party either via its website or a private message to me.

I think if an elected politician wishes to change party, they should generally resign and then stand for office under their new party colours. There may be some justifiable exceptions, depending on circumstances.
What are your views?

I confirm that I am a local councillor and was elected as an independent. I feel that party politics has no place in local government and will act independently for the people whom I represent.
I shall not resign, nor shall I represent the FEP as a councillor. |

Politics has no place in local politics? Where do you think the vast majority of "local" funding comes from, a leprechaun's pot of gold? Even 'independents' have views either left or right of the spectrum, and denying they exist is really unrealistic.

I wonder if this is the same Debbie Le May who was adopted`as`the UKIP candidate for Hertford & Stortford for the 2005 general election. She then defected to Veritas just before the election, only to be soundly beaten by the 'last minute' replacement UKIP candidate. I wonder to whom she belongs now ?

Debbie was elected for a full term as an Independent and is perfectly entitled, both morally and legally, to serve out her term. The fact that she has joined the FEP, in the meantime, is of itself not relevant. If Blair could win a general election in 1997 with the explicit commitment NOT to introduce top-up fees (which he then went on to do but only in England), and again in 2005 with another express commitment to hold a referendum on the EU constitution/treaty, who can seriously start to get prissie about Debbie's situation? Nil desperandum! [Sorry about the foreign lingo!] - |
