Yes, the law should serve the people and protect them. The penalities for flouting the law continually should be designed in such a way it acts as a deterrent.

RTL> Exactly.
I think nobody is going to respect the law as a whole when they are shoved on a DNA database for dropping an apple core or calling a horse "gay". The public also lose faith in the system when you have people shot in the head several times like that Brazillian chap then the government and police spin the story and act as a bunch of contemptable liars. Then on the other hand you have gangs of kids running round stealing cars, kicking people to death and they get let off with an ASBO.... Out of interest where do you stand on the DNA database debate? Personally I think it should only exist for convicted sex offenders and murderers. Sticking people on it who have never been convicted of a crime, who have only been questioned, been found innocent or given a warning for being drunk/not wearing a seat belt/swearing/putting too much rubbish in their bin etc. is a waste of resources and a bloody joke! It's a difficult one to be honest. There is the issue of infringement of human rights, but there is also a case to be made for having everyone's DNA on a database from birth. This would allow many crimes to be solved a lot quicker and to know who is and who isn't a citizen in this country.
It's a subject that needs careful consideration isn't it?

It is nice to have a thread where people have stuck to the issue and tried to add constructive points, albeit most of the points made do not exactly agree with my own.
![]() I would caution you against going too far down the road of advocating extending sentences, boot camps and the like. There is a case for something that takes into account the previous sentence but try to keep it proportionate. TomPhil made some good points IMO which really follow on from some things I was suggesting earlier. |

Yes, the reason I've posted policy subjects is to stimulate debate, and collect ideas and opinions. This helps us to formulate sensible policies based on opinion rather than a party or individual doctrine.

Unionist> I think there is certainly a good case for Boot camp being used to turn young lads round. Apart from the life skills learnt such as Ironing, washing clothes etc. the discipline is what a lot of these lads lack, with no father figure etc in the family.

I don't remember people walking round stabbing people with screw drivers or combat knives, and I agree if you where seen to be up to no good then 6 months in the slammer would have been the course of action. Ea of dune |
