The difference in a UK-wide referendum is that (for once at least) the people of Scotland will know the opinions of the people of England! If a majority of the 3.9 million voters in Scotland voted in favour of remaining part of the UK then I would expect that to largely affect the outcome. However, if in the same referendum a majority of the 38 million voters in England voted YES to the question: "Should Scotland leave the UK if that is what its people wish?" the people of Scotland would left in no doubt about what WE think, and might possibly cease being so persistently gobby and hogging the media as at present! I would not expect Parliament to act directly on such an opinion but, nevertheless, it would be there for all to note! Now that really would be something! ---------------------------- |
