Yes, of course they are. You can easily see that by the market movements. Supply and demand in the short term is static, save for an exceptionally cold winter across the globe, which er... doesn't really tend to happen very much really, especially because the globe tends to turn relative to the sun! So why do prices move in the way they do? It seems at the eleventh hour the EU has decided to prove to the world it has a use. I guess it feels a bit like the Tory Party, watching an endless stream of deserters as the prospect of a referendum looms. So we see some action!

Quote:

The Prime Minister said he will urgently look at “extending criminal offences” to cover market manipulation in the energy sector, after BP and Shell were raided by European authorities on suspicion of rigging oil prices.

Ouch!

I bet that made them choke on their champagne. Cameron's now on the go about it as well.

Quote:

Amid fears that British motorists could have been duped into paying thousands of pounds too much for petrol over the past decade, Mr Cameron told the companies they will face the “full force of the law” if the accusations are true.

The trouble with all of this is that Cameron should have acted first. He's always seen to be reacting to this or that, and each time it is another fraud of some sort to do with corporations. Perhaps, just perhaps, the man might think to himself, what if one day I become proactive and decide to take preventative measures, like for example souping up the Serious Fraud Office and doing spot checks on large trading to see if it is up to scratch. Also they could check out supermarket meat to see if it is what it says it is, and indeed it could do a review of all the regulation to make sure everything is regulated fairly and efficiently. There shouldn't be a company that is too big to be regulated by the law. The Americans do at least do some of this checking themselves. The latest fixing of some mortgage index was discovered by them.

This Sunday AM I saw a program that said where we bought our fuels from, and how we were in reality getting ripped of by those we are dealing with.
Does anyone remember COAL it's that black stuff the we have about two hundred years supply of right beneath our feet?
It had a reputation for being highly polluting, but in the days we burned lots of it, no real research went into improving our usage as it was cheaper to put up with the muck.
Today we would need new and bigger mines to win the coal in sufficient quantities and while these were being made the required research and development could be put in to cleaner usage and safer mining practices to be in place for when the new mines are ready to drive new headings.
How can it make any kind of sense to buy energy from abroad when we are sat on all we could use for the next 200 years at the last British coal estimate as I remember. That's 200 years of employment and cheaper reliably sourced energy more than enough time to find a real sustainable alternative and stop making the green fields of England into wind farms or paying top prices for fuel from abroad.
I know the cries of SCARGILL, STRIKES and ACID RAIN will be heard across the land, mixed in with the NIMBY chants but I feel to bring our energy supplies in house would be worth so much to this country that it is only common sense to do so!
