Why do moderators enjoy moderating?

After the abrupt closure of the What makes a moderator wish to moderate? thread, I hope fairness prevails and at least a couple more comments will be allowed.

I just wanted to say thanks to the two mods who did give a reply to the question. (And no thanks at all to the ones that didn’t!) I have noticed a point that I hope readers will find interesting. Ron and Angelman explained briefly how they were asked, and then agreed to the task.

But this doesn’t answer the question – which was what are the motivating factors in wanting to keep order. Ron, your closing comment was “Anyway.....so that's what makes a moderator wish to moderate…..”

In fact, none of you gave the slightest indication of why you feel motivated to exercise a level of authority on a group activity.

I just think this is noteworthy that people will listen to words, yet not quite hear the true sense of the question. We’re all guilty of it, me especially. Anyway, thanks for listening.

Ron, you can close this one as well if you feel so inclined.

It has been reported within the last hour or so that Ray Manzarek, keyboard player of the legendary 1960s Californian psychedelic rock band The Doors...

It has been reported within the last hour or so that Ray Manzarek, keyboard player of the legendary 1960s Californian psychedelic rock band The Doors has passed away aged 74. Apparently he was suffering from cancer and died peacefully in Germany, surrounded by family.

I have often felt that the musical talent of the Doors was overstaged by their equally legendary, but flawed frontman, Jim Morrison. Certainly Morrison is on record as saying Robby Kreiger, their guitarist, never got the recognition he deserved. Listening to some of that guy's blues breaks I can only agree. But they just worked together so well! Morrison's voice, kreiger's guitar, Manzareks keyboards and Densmore's drums in a esoteric musical crafting that totally captured the imagination. 'Peace Frog', 'The End', 'LA Woman' anyone?

It's 50 years since the acid drenched hayday of psychedelia. I bet that in another 50 or 100 years the music of the Doors will still cause as much jaw dropping amazement to acolytes as it did to me when I first heard it 25+ years ago.

When the musics over,
When the musics over,
Turn out the light,
Turn out the light!

Ray Manzarek. Musician. RIP.

I apologise if this topic’s appeared before. If it has, it deserves to be asked again because it’s a good question – well, I think so anyway.

It’s probably a blend of wanting positive results while being a part of the process to maintain order. There’s no doubt noble intentions play a part, but what are the other possible motivators?

Some folks like to assume responsible positions, and feel comfortable with a sense of duty. Equally, others are happy to be rank-and-file. I’d be interested to know if our moderators were ever Scouts, or held other positions of authority as youngsters.

This’ll give my age away – how many of you were milk monitors as kids? Any school prefects among you (shudder)? What’s probably just as interesting is that some won’t care to admit events in their pasts. This could be interesting factually, as well as a bit of fun.

Most mods here would put political thinking on their list of interests, I think. Any of you team-minded individuals care to bare your souls?

An idea I had many years ago was to have a free tram service up and down Oxford street and pedestrian walk ways. Oxford street is blocked by empty buses nose to tail at times. From marble arch to Tottenham court road a free tram service would be ideal. So many bus companies plying for hire, congest these roads. I've often walked quicker down oxford street, beating a bus at times. As a London cabbie I know I'll loose a bit of business but I think it's worth it. It would also look very pleasing to the eye.

So what does go through your mind? Out here in Blighty it seems that the inhabitants are thinking to themselves, ah, its time to make some noise. They look in their garages for anything that can make more noise than the competition. Why use a pair of shears when you can have a supped up turbocharged horrible noisy thing to do it? A quiet strimmer!!! No such thing. Keeping up with the Jones these days requires a petrol job. They look out in their garden and see the grass has grown a few more millimetres since the sunny day the day before, so its exciting, isn't it. Jones has got all his noisemakers out, so the other Jones' are thinking it can't be right. These lawnmowers are much like it is at drag racing meeting. You’ve always got the real professional though, not to be confused with the mere amateur noisemaker. For this a concrete cutter is just the job. The customer won't think he's getting his money's worth unless its engine is deafening, so he comes to work with a pair of ear muffs. This is his number one way of advertising to all those potential customers out there who only have an Argos special to compete with.
