Last Friday,13 June 2008,a large French fishing trawler hove too at the Hartlepool fish quay and unloaded its huge catch of whitefish.
When unloaded the Quay Manager informed the French Captain that he could not unload his fish in port and then return to sea to catch even more fish because Hartlepool fish quay was refusing to accept it as it was to be loaded onto trucks and transported back to France thus freeing the vessel from sailing all the way back to its home port to offload its catch. He was instructed to load all his fish back onto his boat which he did, before leaving Hartlepool port. The Captain was transporting his catch via UK roads because of the high fuel costs involved if his vessel had to sail to France. On seeing this catch of fish the massively depleted Hartlepool fishing fleet captains and crews were agast at the quantity of fish the vessel had offloaded, remarking that they could not fish because they had caught the alloted quota and that the landed french fish was more than their fleet could catch for a full month of fishing.(source, not verbatim, from the Hartlepool Mail). |

Maybe the same fish offloading refusals should spread to all our ports?
After all, what can the EU do to our fishermen that has not already been done? I reckon UKIP should back the fishermen blocking the EU boats unloading catches here for transport by road back to the EU. Besides, our boats wont be landing there catches in the EU ports will they? A BIT CONFRONTATIONAL FOR THE UK FISHING PORTS BUT CERTAINLY WORTH IT,SO WHAT HAVE WE GOT TO LOSE,ZILCH? |
