Default Brief extract, Mr. Mardell, BBC correspendent, european matters

Brief extract from Mark Mardell's euroblog (on the link given in the last posting to this thread) on the subject of the Irish No vote to the EU Constitution Lisbon 'Treaty' in last week's referendum: "The plan is that all other countries will press ahead with backing the treaty. I am told Gordon Brown has phoned the French President to assure him that is what he will do. But this surely is just a holding pattern. Without Ireland on board Lisbon is dead."

(For those who do not know it Mr. Mardell is a BBC correspondent who reports on european matters)

Unfortunately the Czech Government backs the EU Constitution Lisbon 'Treaty'.

So the Czech Republic has a Head of State (President Klaus) who rightly opposes the EU Constitution - and a Government which backs it.

The Czech President obviously reflects the view of the Czech people on the sovereignty issue but the Czech Government represents the view of the EU.

Default Sovereign veto powers

I'm not a constitutional expert but it wouldn't surprise me to discover that the Czech President had the power to veto his country's accession to the Evil Union in the first place.

Likewise, Her Majesty had every right to block British accession to the then EEC. If only she had.
