Default Morocco to join the EU?

Morocco applied to join the European Union in 1987. The application was rejected by the European Council because it was not considered a European country and therefore not eligible to join. The Copenhagen criteria had not yet been agreed upon at that time.

In 2006 EU commissioner for external relations, Benita Ferrero-Waldner declared that "we [EU] already have a very, very close relationship with Morocco, and we're studying giving them even more advanced status."

Since 2000 Morocco and the EU have signed many bilateral agreements. We can quote the various agreements of free trade that Morocco ratified with its principal economic partners like the Euro-Mediterranean free trade area agreement with the objective of integrating the European Free Trade Association at the horizons of 2012. The two sides recently announced plans to extend their Free Trade Agreement to cover not only goods, but also all agriculture and services by 2010, giving Morocco almost the same deal with Europe as member states have with each other. Those agreements are parts of the Euro-Med Partnership signed in Barcelona, Spain in 1995.

Morocco and the EU have also signed an open-skies agreement. The agreement is Europe's first ever outside its borders. It came into force on summer 2006.

Checking Wikipedia man parts of the world which are not in Europe are in the EU because of colonial connections

European Union - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
look under geography

now given that it was a French protectorate until 1956 is it so strange

You overestimate stupidity of european leaders. Special agreements can be made with those countries, but they will not have representation in european parliament.

Algeria, Tunisia and Turkey will join as well as Armenia, Azerbaijan.

Russia, Belarus and the Ukraine will also enter closer ties with the EU - especially with the energy issues ever more pressing.

The plan for the EU will be for it to eventually embrace the area from the western shores of Ireland to the Eastern plains of the Russian continent, and then from the frozen tundra of the Arctic to the deserts of North Africa.

Grab a map, mark those points, line a square and colour it blue and gold, everything inside will eventually end up as part of 'The Union' (as it will be known as) and with the United Nations moved to a new base in Gibraltar.

Requests have already been made that the Middle East countries be asked to join. Makes sense if the EU wants to control the oil industry.

It's funny how those who want to leave the EU give advice. Russia can only have special agreement with EU, but it cannot join it. You forgot why the EU exists at all - so that middle sized countries which had lot of influence in the past (like France, Germany) keep at least some of that influence in the EU, and through EU influence world politics. EU reached about 80% of its maximum size.

How very naïve you are.
Turkey is just the beginning.
