I have never been aksed to remove the cover from my passport.

Or asked why my passport got damaged on the front as to obliterate the words European Union.

You want to be careful with that, I know of a UKIP member in Cornwall who was prosecuted for doing exactly the same thing.

You don't need a sticker to do that though do you, I'm pretty sure the diplomats and foreign service of other EU countries are aware of who is in the EU, especially as our passports already say EUSSR on the cover..
Local police and military don't know this and so having it spelled out can only help.

In fact I've spent much of the last 40 years working outside of Britain, and from time to time in some pretty far flung parts of the world at that.

Thankfully those days are in the past. It soon stops being fun.

On the occasions when I've had cause to call on our overseas embassies, especially in the last 20 years, I've found them to be staffed by an incompetent shower of time serving chinless wonders who didn't give much of a stuff for anything that interrupted their cushy life.

Default Consulate

If they opened the passport and looked inside it they would be able to tell pretty quickly as it says EU in many different languages. I don't buy the silly sticker argument, what happens when it peels of, or as is often the case when the airport stick a security check sticker over the EU one?
I doubt the police in many countries especially Commonwealth countries give a toss if it has an EU sticker on it anyway, they can tell a British passport pretty quickly.

Absolute waste of time and no doubt money.

This still does not prove that the British consulates are any worst then the German or French or Romanian etc. My wifes experience of the consulate in New York was one of professionalism for example.

Not yet, yaro, as they haven't been designed, I don't think. It will probably be a blue flag with a ring of gold stars.

The EU is not always as well respected as the UK - it depends where you are in the world. There are plenty of places that it is better it be a Brit - the USofA for starters.

I've never had to use anybody's embassy or consulate so can't compare, but I have been to embassy/ambassadorial functions in many cities around the world. The staff are, as one might expect, a mix of great experience and knowledge, time servers, 'bright young things' and any other personality type you might encounter (including complete tart in the case of the 3 secretaries who sh@gged my mate in Jerusalem). It does, as pointed out, depend on people's expectations. My brother lost his passport, cash and plane ticket in an arson attack in Grenada; our 'man' couldn't have been more helpful in giving him a temporary get you home travel document and a loan for the ticket and assistance with the police complaint.

I wonder if they'll send me 2 stickers as I have to have 2 passports for my work. I won't be applying them.

I was told by a well known barrister, that national citizenship is a legal concept, whereas E.U. citizenship is merely a political one. Should that be the case, how can one indicate disapproval of being forced to advertise this 'political concept' on a personal passport?

I know someone who argues that the EU ring of gold stars, adopted from the Council of Europe, is a specifically religious symbol. The last I heard of him, he was engaged in torrents of correspondence, claiming that he should be excused from displaying any
document, showing those 'rings', on grounds of conscience. I could only live in a country like this!
