Default A reaction?

Gianni Alemmanno has been voted as mayor in Rome - the whole of Europe is starting to flap as he is very Right Wing and apparently wears a celtic cross and will be expelling foreign low-life from Rome.

The whole debate in Italy has changed - the views espoused on these blogs, which we have to admit are for the moment in a minority or certainly do not get any media space, have become totally mainstream in Italy! Alemmano during his campaign did not shy away from his past and admitted being ex MSI and clearly stated that law & order and immigration were his main concerns.

Interesting, this confirms my supicion that Italy was heading that way. The question is, will he be pro EU or anti?
I also saw there are talks of an Italian partition on the horizon.

Italian right may conquer Rome for first time in six decades - Europe, News - The Independent

Quote:
Who is Gianni Alemanno?

It is the CV of a classic extremist: joined a neo-Fascist party as a youth; arrested for beating up a young leftist; arrested again for throwing a Molotov cocktail; eight months in jail on remand; acquitted on both charges; arrested for attacking police during a visit by President Bush Snr. Then abruptly in 1994 Gianni Alemanno and the rest of his party went straight, abjuring Mussolini, renouncing Fascism, and trying to rebrand the National Alliance as an ordinary European conservative party. Now Mr Alemanno is walking a tightrope: trying to persuade middle-of-the-road Romans he means no harm, while baring his xenophobic teeth to the neo-Fascist faithful. Complicating the picture is the fact he has been a practising Zen Buddhist for 15 years – and his meditation teacher is a card-carrying Communist. Which is why his calls for "inter-religious dialogue" may not be as empty as they sound.
Surprise surprise he is a mate of Berlusconi, says it all.
Berlusconi is a dodgy fellow indeed and was a good mate of Tony. Back in the 80's when the Italian police busted a crime outfit masquerading as a Freemasons lodge over dodgy fraud dealings, Berlusconi was linked to the group along with dodgy mafia folks amongst others. This was a massive scandal at the time as the group was supposed to be responsible for the collapse of an Italian financial giant.
Berlusconi is also supposed to be appointing seperatists to the new Italian governments cabinet.

Also I've read that the Italians have essentially been pushing for concentration camp type affairs for sticking the gypsies in, and have done deals with the Libyans to build camps over there for housing illegals.

Italys future is going to be an interesting show to watch!

I'll see if I can dig out the articles and add them to this post for those interested.

Italy's economy is struggling because they're tied into the Euro and can't devalue. The place is beautiful and the people are generally very nice, but they're up the creek without a paddle and will ultimately take others down with them.

Note the CV of Alemanno - 8 years in prison on remand and then acquitted. We do not need the Italian version of corpus juris here.

Berlusconi may be a dodgy fellow but when Pradi was in power he had the opportunity to have Berlusconi taken to court .... but none of this happened ...at least none of the alleged major scandals Berlusconi has been charged with over the years has resulted in any charges against Berlusconi sticking .

....so my take on this is that Berlusconi is not as bad as he is made out to be ...

Berlusconi has one thing in his favour, which makes him a friend because he has the same enemies as us - the EU

As for blair - we all know how he sucked up to people... and I'm sure Berlusconi was not averse to having any big political player friends he could get .. so his friendship is an irrelevence...

Yes, there is talk of a split of northern Italy, and Berlusconi has some of the group supporting this in his government ... I wouldn't personally favour a split, and I doubt if Berlusconi really does, as this just plays into the hands of the EU. Having these people in his government where he can make appropriate concessions is much better than them fighting the Berlusconi government.
