Default EU forces passengers on and off the buses

EU forces passengers on and off the buses - Telegraph
Quote:
Bus passengers who travel along a route of more than 30 miles must get off the vehicle midway through their journey to comply with new EU laws.

The Brussels ruling dictates that drivers must pull over and let everyone off their bus after 30 miles, to ensure they do not spend too long behind the wheel.
Western Greyhound, a bus company operating in rural Devon and Cornwall, is among those affected.
Its Newquay to Plymouth route has been split in three, even though a single driver is used for the entire distance.
The driver is obliged to pull over and ask everyone to get off before the route number on the front of the vehicle is changed, and all the passengers are invited back on board.
Passengers have been told they must buy three tickets to complete the route, and they must also break their journey twice.
Western Greyhound managing director Mark Howarth said: “It’s a farce. We have to kick customers off as soon as the driver hits the 30-mile limit.
“Often it’s in the middle of nowhere. The passengers think we are crazy.
“We’re caught up in something aimed at long-distance truckers.”
Liberal Democrat transport spokesman Norman Baker has written to Transport Secretary Ruth Kelly asking that bus companies are able to opt-out of the law.
He said: “These rules don’t stop buses running more than 30 miles.
“All they do is inconvenience the passengers who have to keep getting on and off. It’s like an Ealing comedy.”
Long-distance coach journeys are exempt from the law.

It's not as daft as it seems at first sight.

The driving conditions for long distance coach drivers differ from those for bus drivers.

I regularly use Western Greyhound services to get around, this rule is nothing short of ridiculous. It's a massive inconvenience to have to sit on a bus (or worse, get kicked off it) for ages whilst the driver takes his obligatory break.

This is also going to make travelling around the Country by coach nothing short of pointless. The train journey out of the Westcountry is awful, it looks like the bus journey is about to be a lot worse.

This has put me right off using public transport, I expect I'll just use the car in future.

This will teach me for commenting before researching further.

Apparently the regs only require vehicles that will travel more than 30 miles to have a tachograph, and the services are being split up to avoid having to pay for them (£1000 each, £500PA to maintain).

Obviously this is a very painful cost for local bus companies, and as such I still intend to raise the issue with my MP.

There you go - that's the reason for it's introduction.

Try to eradicate local transport services by making them economically un-viable, destroy agriculture etc etc.

Whilst our government do their bit by shutting down rural post offices, forcing pensioners to pay extortionate taxi fares to travel miles to claim their pensions.

So if you ever needed proof that these people don't give a sh*t but actually enjoy destroying everything they can, then here you have it too.

I hope you're proud of the EU policies you defend Eurosceptic......

When have I ever defended EU policies?

In case you haven't clocked, I'm anti-EU.

I will find out about this as many journeys are more than 30 miles in the Highlands. [I do not have a car]

There is a different take on this. It seems the story started with The Sun, and the Telegraph does not escape criticism.
