EU and Tax

I have just read the story about the Tories proposal to increase tax on alcopops when i came upon the following statement.

Quote:

A spokeswoman for the chancellor said there was no provision in European law for a separate tax on alcopops.

And they say the EU doesn't interfere how a nation state runs its own affairs

Of course it does. And I don't doubt there is some provision somewhere about identify cards for all citizens. There is certainly plenty about cultural cohesion.
