The Sovereign Base Areas of Akrotiri and Dhekelia are two UK administered areas on the island of Cyprus that comprise the Sovereign Base Areas Overseas Territory of the United Kingdom. On 1 January 2008 Akrotiri and Dhekelia adopted the euro along with the rest of Cyprus.

Misleading, I think - Permanent bases of UK forces overseas have, in my experience, always used the local currency as the primary currency in bases bars, naafi and so on. It was also usually possible to use sterling.
AFAIK, remaining british bases in germany have been using the euro for some time now.

Yeah, most bases use the local currency, as well as sterling.
It's no different to the US air force bases RAF Mildenhall, Alconbury and Lakenheath - where they use pounds and dollars. NB Though in the US bases (which are massive!) they have often have their own little economy running - with Wendy's, McDonalds and Burger King competing and even a 'Sherrif Department' manned by the US MPs! |

Because residents often journey to the mainland to buy things.

By that logic we should adopt the Euro too.

Not really. Only a small part of the UK is in a position to have a casual trip to France or Ireland, and very few would do it just to get some shopping. It doesn't warrant changing the currency of an entire nation.
But, some places in Dover etc. Such as the ferry terminals do accept Euros.

Yes, it is in fact true. Marks and Spencer aren't the only company I know of to do this. I've seen other retail outlets, petrol stations and travel companies accept Euros as payment.
