Default French sovereignty passions clash with EU legal primacy

French sovereignty passions clash with EU legal primacy

Quote:
A passionate debate has emerged in France over the challenge posed by EU law to national sovereignty, focusing on the question of whether the ultimate legal authority lies with the French constitution or with the European Court of Justice.

The country which in 2005 rejected the European Constitution has this winter seen an intense public discussion on the supremacy of EU law, with French president Jacques Chirac receiving open letters from academics and with apocalyptic terms flying around.
Just the sort of debate we need in the UK

Wow, the coffee must be getting stronger.

Is this the masses slowly realising they have been done up like kippers?

Non! Sacre Blue! Vive le France

I think the French have accepted the EU because although the EU affects so many laws, the French either already had similar and more onerous or would have intorduced them anyway. i.e. all the time the EU is built in your image you notice no problems. However as we saw when the French rejected the constitution because it would break down the social model, when it starts to change things counter to your beliefs it becomes notciable.

I hope the French are their ususal militant selves and kick up a stink.
