Next bout of expansion?
"Mr Kálmán Mizsei was appointed (as EU special representative) for the Republic of Moldova, with particular focus on the Transnistria conflict, the strengthening of democracy as well as cooperation and surveillance on the Moldova-Ukraine border."
This is from the Commission's website. Another dude has been appointed to represent the Great Lakes region in Africa, but that is a different kettle of fish, as the Congo remains politically and economically close to Belgium. This latter move is partly to consolidate the EU's position there. The context is a different one.
Moldova is highly significant, as it borders the nation that the EU covets the most: Ukraine. If Moldova comes in, that will also make it easier for Belarus to take the plunge, although that is unlikely to happen while Lukashenko is still breathing. Unless of course Putin can absorb Belarus first, a move that is on the table at the moment.
