It's dangerous for the countries of the EU to rely on Russia for gas supplies because Russia will "blackmail" if it falls out with a nation it supplies energy to
  - so says UKIP MEP Dr. John Whittaker. Find out more at:  http://www.ukip.org/ukip_news/gen12.php?t=1&id=2857 |

In doing so, of course, I blocked myself from changing the thread title because once someone has posted a reply one cannot edit a posting (even if it is the first posting to the thread from where the thread title is typed in). I've clicked on quote instead of edit before in attempts to correct or edit a posting. Never mind. :? |

This is the sort of thing that should be concerning the nation most. Making our country self-sufficient for energy.
Yes we should deal with other nations, when the price is right for Britain, but it should never be taken for granted.

I agree.
It's possible that this Government can take some of the blame for high gas prices now. They could have done more years ago to build up this country's gas storage facilities so supplies of gas from outside the UK could be brought in and stored at times when gas was less expensive than it is now. I'm sure I read somewhere a few months aqo that the UK can only store up to 11 days' supply of gas. Apparently some continental european nations can store a supply of four or five months. As everyone knows, a large amount of gas storage space in the UK would be useful if supplies from continental europe to the UK are cut off (i.e. by a fault or - and let's hope it never happens - an attack on the gas pipeline in Russia or elsewhere). So, thanks to Blair/Liebour, we've only got 11 days' gas reserves. While countries like Germany can go for months without any new supplies of gas being delivered. I would like to see UKIP have a policy that the UK build up storages of gas of least a year (if not longer) so as to reduce the threat of countries that supply us gas from 'blackmailing' the UK over the price of gas or over other political matters. |

As an Island Country we must definitely aim to be as close to 100% self sufficient in both food and power production as possible. Several years ago some of you may remember there was a lot of talk about "Hot Rocks" thermal power, but according to this mornings SW TV it went out of vogue when oil and gas became so cheap, now they're beginning to rethink the idea, because they have discovered the potential power available is like having a 6metre seam of coal running under the whole of Devon and Cornwall!
