The Right Hon. David Heathcoat-Amery MP (the strongly eurosceptic Conservative MP who attended the european convention in Brussels on the drafting of the EU Constitution throughout 2003) asked the discredited europhile Blair at Prime Minister's Question Time in the Commons today at 12.17 pm "Why is the Prime Minister colluding over the EU Constitution by appointing officials to negotiate behind closed doors in private talks with German officials on the EU Constitution. This goes against his talk of wanting open debate and that these matters should be brought before Parliament. Will he keep his promise to allow a referendum on the EU Constitution?"
Blair said "There is no question of anything being done behind closed doors. We spent last year taking stock of the French and Dutch 'No' (to the EU Constitution) votes in the referendums (of 2005). Of course we are talking to Germany (holder of the EU Presidency). And we stand by our promise to hold a referendum on the EU Constitution treaty. There will be such talks in view of the strong bi-lateral relations we have with Germany. I wish the Right Honourable Gentleman (Mr. David Heathcoat-Amery MP) could be liberated from their antiquated view of europe." Britannist adds: In other words - Blair admits there are talks going on behind the scenes (about EU Constitution version 2). Secret talks - a trend he claimed before he became Prime Minister he would try to stop. Only because the Germany Ambassador to the UK said (on GMTV on Sunday morning of this week) that such talks were taking place Blair has had to admit that europhile civil servants in both countries (the UK and Germany) are up to their usual tricks. Notice the liar Blair claiming that this Government will honour its promise to hold a referendum on the EU Constitution. The wording of his reply in the Commons today carefully refers to the EU Constitution - not to any EU Constitution mark 2 (which is what UK civil servants and Government officials are now working on as he has had to admit). And not to any treaty under a different name which replaces the original EU Constitution. Blair's commitment to keeping his promise over a referendum is worthless - for it applies only to the last EU Constitution (rejected by the voters of France and Holland) and not to the next one. And what is a promise from Blair - now on the 'fag end' of his disastrous decade as Prime Minister - worth anyway? |
