Default Criminal Record Check

Anybody agree with me that having to be subjected to a criminal record check as a precondition of being selected as an MEP candidate is an intrusion of liberty/privacy?

I don't.

It doesn't preclude anyone from being selected if they do have a criminal record and goes some way to ensure truthfulness on the application form (which I presume asks the pertinent questions). If a candidate lies on the application form about a criminal record they certainly shouldn't be allowed to be a candidate.

The anti-UKIP media will be all over UKIP and the poor old UKIP press office if a load of MEP candidates are found to have criminal records that the party has no knowledge of.

I agree with the policy but what happens if you had an indiscretion as a youth which you fully regret should that count for the rest of your life?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but (some) incidents "drop off" your criminal record anyway (Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974), and incidents committed as a 'youth' are wiped out when you reach 18?

Not always. Immigration agencies around the world do not recognize the RoO Act, and all criminal convictions must be declared to them.

Its should be made a criminal offence to stand as a MEP .Might as well nip it in the bud before lure of corruption takes hold

all criminal convictions
Not just convictions, arrests and cautions/warnings/fines too.

I bet your immigration servies love dealing with the hundreds of British with thought crimes invented by Labour coming to their shores.

I agree with CRB checks, I would like to know that my regional MEP has no past convictions, has never dabled in fraud and it might also benefit voters to know if the candidate had ever been declared bankrupt!!

What do others think?

Cool Enhanced Criminality! You know it makes sense!

I've got my CRB check. I'm now the proud owner of an Enhanced Criminal Record Certificate. We enhanced criminals must stick together, otherwise we could be got at.
