The final part of the last posting to this thread should read as follows:

Quote:
Recycled plastic bags are cheaper to produce than recycled paper bags and plastic bags survive getting wet - many paper bags do not. An important point for those carrying a heavy load of shopping home. What use is a paper shopping bag - recycled paper or not - when you have a large heavy load of shopping in it and rain causes the paper bag to get soggy and start breaking up?

Economically and environmentally plastic bag or recycled plastic bag production is better than paper bag or recycled paper bag production.

I've got a rather nice jute bag which I think was virtually free in a german hyper market. Not only long lasting but ecologically sound.

Fine, I'll pay 5p for a bag if they pay me 5p each time I re-use it, I should make at least 95p per bag. But of course they won't because it is just another turn of the screw by this excuse for a government and their string pullers in Brussels - the green issue is just a red herring.

I don't know if it is true - but I did hear that Tesco are to start charging for plastic carrier bags (given out at their check-outs) from next month.
If Marks & Spencer think they have got it bad then Tesco will suffer ten fold, their carrier bags are so thin they have to be doubled up for everything except a loaf of bread. If they start charging for bags I will boycott them too, these supermarkets need to stop pushing people around and masses of angry customers will be the ones to teach them a lesson.

Well my lovely, I walked into Marks & Sparks food hall, got myself a trolley and did what us women do best, load it up (haha). I made a point of filling up with perishable goods from the chilled and frozen sections including lots of cream cakes that start to go off after half an hour at room temperature. Got to the checkout and put it all on conveyor belt at which point my stomach started to feel a bit funny (haha), checkout woman said to me, "How many bags would you like?" I said, "Well I don't know, I'll see as I go along" She said, "There is a 5p charge for each one" I said at the top of my voice, "How muuuuchhh??? What a cheek, I'm not paying for carrier bags!" She said, "Well you must have known, it's been all over the news" I said, "I've been abroad and I'm not putting up with this ****, I will do my shopping at Sainsburys instead" I then walked out at a fast pace and didn't look back. Hahahahaha my stomach was doing somersaults, what a buzz, you have to do it!!

Sainsbury's bags are well known for being thin and one should always double up the bags (i.e. use two bags to carry one load of shopping) at the Sainsbury's check-out.

Default Supermarket, check-out plastic bags, customers, advertises

I wasn't aware of that - thank you for informing me G. Hall.

I use as many supermarket check-out plastic bags as I can. They make good bin-liners.

I think it is wrong for supermarkets to charge customers for them. Customers who have just spent money on a shop should not be asked to pay for their bags.

And I think most people will think it wrong that a supermarket charges someone for a plastic bag which advertises that same supermarket.

We use supermarket bags as bin liners and car bin liners
Certainly if they start charging i will turn them inside out NO free ads
as regards the cost the current model will factor the cost of bags into the mix when they price product if they then start charging then they and HMRC will profit
