But the same is true for the word "Murdoch" and that is the sort of media, perhaps with the Guardian, which is all that will be left without the BBC. Murdoch and Murdochesque publications and channels.

Oh dear god, I just had an awful thought! We might get Fox news!

I have been here just over 9 months.

Here in the UK we are forced to pay the BBC to get the right to watch ITV or other independent broadcasters. The television licence is a ridiculous system - we should not have to pay the biased BBC so we can watch ITV.
ITV was rubbish unless you like Corrie and reality TV, Channel four was better and BBC actually had the best programs on normal TV.

In Australia the public TV is alot weaker and TV in general here is dire, most of it is sport and reality TV. There could be a correlation.

Even if the Beeb went commercial, we (the general we) would still have to pay.

You may have a point.
We have cable and that gives dozens, if not hundreds, of channels.
Many of them are, to use your word, dire. Or worse.
As I have remarked to Mrs B on a few occasions, 100 channels of crepe is no better than 6 channels of crepe.

If the BBC were run by subscription we would only pay them if we wanted to.

We should not be made to pay the BBC to get the right to watch ITV or other independent channels.

Just because you prefer the BBC does not mean that up to 17 million households who want to watch ITV should be made to pay for the BBC just because you like it.

The BBC is biased and it makes us pay them for their bias.

Why should I have to pay the BBC scrounger just so I can watch ITV or other independent channels?

Scrap the anachronistic compulsory television licence fee.

Do you mean an annual subscription or pay-per-view arrangement?

I quite agree, at the age of 37 I feel that I am able to make a judgement on what Channels I want to watch and am responsible enough to decide what is a fair rate to pay for them. The BBC if it wants me as a customour should provide good quality programes which appeal. As it stand they can put on what they like and i can do nothing about it.

Taxation in some shape or form always tends to be neccesary as governments have to raise revenue to fund certain things, the TV licence is not a neccesary tax in anyway.

The BBC like most media does provide some good stuff but this outweighed by dross - the ratio on ITV is as bad and on Sky much worse I cannot think of anything except the Simpsons and Futurama that I would miss on Sky

Still what do you expect when our education system and value system is so skewed
