Default A warning for Brits: don't repeat the French mistake

The French government, obedient to ecofascists, forbade any corporations to build any motorways (other than city bypasses like ringroads) in France. Do not repeat that mistake. Motorways (The US Interstate Highway System: 40 Year Report) are the best transport roads. The British network, while incomparably better than the Polish one, needs to be expanded.

Nonsense, it needs to be wound down. Personally, I would like to see a speed limit of 10 mph to stop this egotistical maniacs haring around the place and putting innocent lives at risk and ruining the environment for everyone not just themselves.

AGREED.We have a more than adequate road network. What has to be improved is the maintanence.Speed up resurfacing ,reduce damage and lighten the traffic by getting the frieght back on the underused railways.

10mph ! seems a bit slow to me.

There's nowhere near enough roads and the ones that are need serious upgrading. Goodnes knows we pay enough taxes what with the vehicle excise duty (they daren't call it "road Tax" since the fiddle became so obvious) not to mention the rip off fuel that is presented as being "green".

No, to hell with it, we deserve what we pay for.

The infrastructure of this country is cr@p we should have BOTH a decent road system and rail system what have we got is badly patched and worn out.

I bet all those who moan about private cars would 150 years moaned about private horses and carts LUDDITES

I'd also be in favour of getting more freight (and passengers for that matter) off the roads and on to rail transport.
But, much of the rail network was lost following the Beeching report and businesses have evolved to make use of road transport links - geographical locations to suit access to motorways for example.
Network Rail is touting for business:
Network Rail - Moving Freight
The section on the need for road haulage at each end of the journey is interesting. Network rail are accepting that there will generally be such a need.
Many production plants that I have been to had a railway line into the works. Road transport was not required.
Now, I don't know any that have a railway line. Dispatch bays are set up for automatically loading tractor trailer units.
In short, I see no easy way back for rail freight.

There is movement by various authorities to encourage passengers back to rail.
As for freight, road haulage could change to shuttle between premises and rail terminal as short term solution.

It could I don't think that would be a very attractive proposition.
What might be a single door to door operation would then be in three legs with the freight having to be loaded and unloaded at each stage instead of once.
