I think the person who made the remark about Vikings and boats in the year 800 AD (comments referred to in posting number one to this thread) wanted to draw attention to the fact that it was (allegedly) warm enough for Vikings to travel the seas in open boats in the year 800 AD and that ice had melted in certain areas resulting in new sea lanes becoming accessible to them.
