The rate by which extinctions have moved ahead of the background rate appears alarming, and does suggest that we are in the early days of a mass extinction. The real worry is that what are known as 'R species', things like bugs and flies, some fish, mushrooms, etc, adapt really quickly, evolving new sub-species in just a few generations. Cockroaches don't have much to fear from a mass extinction.
'k species', what we might consider to be more complex creatures, can't adapt quickly, and tend to be wiped out by whatever precipitates a mass extinction. Dinosaurs were 'k species'. So is Homo Sapiens..... |

...but what if nationalism, racism, patriotism are regressive genes? The world could end up run by the PC brigade.
Man made extinctions are actually a real threat, whether it be by global warming or sheer lunacy (farewell to the Black Rhino in Zimbabwe - lost to idiocy). The balance of nature is distorted and whilst bugs might regenerate many species that are localised or thinly spread will disappear for ever. The loss of the wolf, beaver, boar, puma/mountain lion, pine marten (this century) and native raptors have created an imbalance in our country. Badgers and foxes are thriving without any predators. The fluffy bunny brigade are up in arms whenever contol is mentioned and we now have mink, rabbit, grey squirrel, brown rat etc roaming widely in our country. This in only a relatively short period of time. A change in climate, man made or otherwise, will exacerbate problems and we shold be careful not to criticise those who think long and hard about the potential problems and look for solutions.

Preparing for possible problems is not a bad idea. Using the perceived notion of threat to impose fascism or steal money is.
