Trains are too dear unless you have no real need for the journey, are travelling alone, can pick strange times to travel and are in a position to book the ticket in advance.

The variation in prices on 'saver' tickets during the day is ludicrous. A return ticket often costs almost the same as a return, so a triangular journey is extra expensive. The whole thing is a mystery and a hassle, and we are paying much more in taxes for all this than before privatisation.
