Just ignore your thoughts on whether or not global warming is occurring; I merely want your ideas for the effects it would have on Britain if it were true. For the moment, put your personal beliefs out of the way.
For one thing, global warming would actually cause Britain to become significantly colder, particularly in winter. We've been told many times that the Gulf Stream from around the Yucatan peninsula is warming our island; what many of us don't know is how it works. The Gulf Stream is in fact a giant convection current and convection currents, as we all know, require the temperature at either end of the current to be significantly different. As global warming occurred and the seas around us warmed slightly, the difference between the warm Gulf of Mexico and our own rather chilly seas would lessen; a convection current would be impossible, and thus the Gulf Stream would fail. Its warming of our shores is of a much greater magitude than the amount global warming could provide; we'd actually end up colder rather than warmer. Consider the Russian and Canadian winters at their worst. That would be much like Britain if the Gulf Stream failed. I've put in my twopenny-worth; what about yours? If global warming were true then what effect would it have on Britain? Akria

So what? Given how far North Britain is, we'd have to get used to it as really we'd be closer to the 'natural' climate our island should have.
Sure, I'd miss the palm trees we have in the garden, but it's not like the difference will affect train services, is it. ![]()

M: "There's a hurricane coming! Run!" R: "Don't worry about it mon, it's just a bit of wind. Have some smoke mon". ![]() |

How do the scientists work out that it will be colder in Britain but warmer in Greenland? Beside the point, I suppose.
If Scotland freezes over, where will they go? After obtaining independence from the UK, they won't have any automatic right to move south of the border. They will start winning a few medals in the winter olympics non-event, but their tourist industry will crash and all their cultural nick-nacks will start to look obsolete and backward. Rising sea levels will mean a massive investment in coastal construction and a network of dykes. Britain will become more like Holland but without the silly language. If Norfolk keeps sinking, we may have to give up on it one day anyway - who would miss Norwich? Would the Thames flood barrier become the UK's no.1 terrorist target? Would anyone be upset if London was 20 feet underwater? Would Ken Livingstone finally reduce the congestion charge? A bleak, cold climate with reduced space for new housing would suddenly make Britain undesirable for immigrants. As the costs rise and the economy struggles, will African countries launch TV appeals to help the poor, destitute Brits? Will we become donation-dependent junkies? If there is more sea between the UK and the continent, will it be possible to accept that the UK is not - and never has been - in Europe? |

And I would miss the great county of Norfolk too. East Anglia is hard to beat. |

If DEFRA actually invested in sea defences then there would not really be a problem for several centuries. The Dutch can manage it why can't we
