Default EU to tell drivers what speed and gear to use - cost £2000

Today's Times reports that:

Motorists are to be forced to change the way they drive to help car manufacturers to meet strict new emission targets, the European Union announced yesterday.

All new cars will be fitted with devices that tell drivers when to change gear , what speeds to drive at  and even when to pump up their tyres :x .

The introduction of new technology to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, ordered by Brussels yesterday, could add more than £2,000 to the price of a typical family car, manufacturers said.

:x

I used to own a car with one of these. It was so infuriating that I quickly covered it (a pesky little orange "SHIFT" light) with black tape.

But I guess to do such a naughty deed will be outlawed in the Evil Union.

How will they know if you change gear or not? An electronic log?

I like to rev it up a bit sometimes to impress the lollipop ladies.

Most modern cars already record a lot of your driving habits. It wouldn't take much to link this to the planned black box and issue punishment to those who rev too high/long etc.

And then nab you on faulty data.

Hey, why not? Our government needs that extra bit of income.

And another thing, what was worse was that the wretchèd thing would be instructing you to shift into fourth or fifth when going uphill at 40 kph! Another reason it had to be taped over pronto.

Now if you're renting a car, just trying to get a real shifter in the first place is a miracle of miracles in Australasia or North America... at least for cars that I could fit in.

Hey, no apology!
I'm sure it happens all the time.
I'm a petrolhead and I thought it an interesting topic. Otherwise I don't suppose I would have noticed.
