Landfill is NOT A PROBLEM.

I don't like the throw away culture, but having space to bury it, isn't really an issue. There is a whole load of space to use, thousands of years.

Do it right and it really isn't a problem.

E.G.

Yes and if we have any spare labour there is a mass of sea defence needed.

Perhaps we should have a two year national service - not in the forces - but at the end of a shovel! Maybe the unemployed might like to get involved.

East Anglia is particularly at risk and this contains some of the nations most productive farm land - much below sea levels [which are rising].

Cut down on waste in the first place.

Do most of the sorting centrally with high-tech equipment.

Recycle the obvious stuff (eg metals) - do it on a commercial basis as far as possible without the involvement of councils. That is, the householder doesm't pay, the council doesn't pay, small recycling/collection firms make money to cover costs and a profit.

Burn most of the rest for electricity generation.

Dump the rest.

I agree - the waste element is probably the easiest for government to legislate against. I mentioned above the idea of containers being made of more durable materials so that they could be reused with a refund when you returned them. Probably a lot more which could be done.

Good idea councils making money from recycling

Who knows Council Tax may go down

It's just that they're going to have to think how the carrot and stick is going to work

M3: Give the staff a share of the profit - have to be careful might get things that aren't rubbish collected!
