I'm an electrical engineer, mathematician, and professional grumpy old man.
I just try to get things right.
Well, I'm an amateur physicist, an amateur historian, an amateur mathematician and many other things, all of which I would say that I'm an amateur in, despite the comments made by my classmates. It's amazing how easy it is to give an impression of genius with just a few esoteric facts. XD
I'm also an amateur grumpy young man who acts as though he's seventy, so I'm just behind you there.
Anyway, where are all the posts? Darn it; I thought this topic was interesting...

Impressive. If you are young , you probably have a good memory too and that is a great asset.
All the posts seem to be in other threads..........

Actually, my memory is pretty bad and I'm extremely absent-minded...

"Impressive". Yay! Thank you.
And I'd like to contradict you. You would not descrive yourself as an intellectual; having read a few of your posts I would say that you most certainly are!

Nah. Read the considered responses to my posts. I am obviously an egocentric fascist cretin.

This appears to have turned into a conversation between a mere two people.

Um... Anyone else gonna consider posting? I thought it was an interesting topic...

Interesting to you and I.
I think the problem is that not all that many people* know enough about physics at any level to be able to discuss this kind of topic in the level of detail that you have.

And when one does make a post with any kind of considered analysis of data it invites posts like:

Quote:
How the hell do you expect thickos like me to understand that jargon?
Or
Quote:
You must get tired blowing that trumpet of yours all day and night besoeker.
Clippo, a retired scientists he says, got the same sort of treatment.

It is difficult to continue a constructive dialogue when faced with such comments. It's a shame, but that seems to be the way it is.

Just my thoughts...........

You may care to look at the topic GW/CC is not man made.
I have posted a graph of number of earthquakes v time. It seems to be causing Paullotion some difficulties. I'd appreciate your feedback on how I could make that data more accessible to him.

*I mean people in general. Not just the members of this forum.[/quote]

Unfortunately I believe that you may be right.
I have a very low opinion of the intelligence of most of humanity nowadays and it has often led me into depression, twice somewhat severe.
Frankly, I would not trust the average citizen nowadays to add two to two and come up with the correct answer.

If it helps your point - When I did Physics at GCSE I got a B. With no revision. Making half the answers up.

Considering grades are given in comparison to the rest of the country, yeah, hardly anyone does.

Personally, I like to learn.

Though I always did wonder how much energy it'd take to warm the planet up.

And that's to raise the temperature of all the world's water by one degrees Celsius. Double the answer to raise it by two.
Are you sure it would be as arithmetical as that?

It is. As Akria put it:
Quote:
One litre of water, I believe, takes 4,200 joules to have a rise in temperature of one degree Celsius.
In general, the energy required is mass x rise x specific heat.
Double the rise thus requires double the energy.
