Professor Philip Stott appeared on James Whale’s TalkSport radio programme between 11 pm to 1 am on 27.11.2006 – 28.11.2006. The Professor said that the 'elite' were using the issue of alleged carbon emissions from aircraft to get at people because they (the 'elite') did not approve of the masses travelling by air around the world.
Professor Stott said that more carbon was emitted from ships than from aircraft in 2005 – but the political were picking on aircraft because they don’t like the masses flying in planes. The Professor added “Carbon emissions are one part in 20 thousand. There has been no rise in the sea levels. 4% of carbon emissions are man made – and 2% of that 4% is British. At the last Global Warming conference, all the scientists flew there. I’ll believe carbon emissions cause global warming when the scientists don’t use aircraft to get to conferences like that. I’ll believe that there is global warming when newspapers like the Guardian and the Independent – who claim that carbon emissions are causing global warming – stop advertising cheap air holidays.” Professor Stott said that it would take 40 years to make a possible breakthrough in the development of nuclear fusion (a system of electricity generation whereby a small amount of electricity produces a greater amount in return by facilitating the fusion of nuclear particles in a vacuum). He confirmed that there was a lot of natural gas left and at least 200 years (and possibly 400 years) of coal supplies left around the world. Oil was in much shorter supply he conceded. “They warn about the dangers of cutting down the rain forests in South America (and the damage it might do to oxygen) – but there are actually more rainforests now than there were 12000 years ago” the Professor pointed out. The Professor doubted that alleged global warming and supposed melting polar ice caps might cause flooding of low lying areas of land around the world. He advised “When the ice in your gin and tonic melts the drink (the amount in the glass) actually goes down – not up.” The issue of the Energy Certificate was also raised in the programme. Professor Stott said “Someone goes on a one day course to train up for the job of Energy Certificate inspector. They then go around making sure that companies have these expensive certificates which are being brought in next year (2007) to comply with the terms of the Kyoto agreement. Many people are not aware of this.” One listener – Mark in Hull – ‘phoned in to say “The believers in the theory of global warming all talk about the future. The sceptics and the non-committed (such as myself) use only facts that are available now – not forecasts about the future which have no facts or statistics to back them up.” Professor Stott’s interesting website is called: http://www.parliamentofthings.info/ About Professor Stott: Philip Stott is Emeritus Professor of Biogeography in the University of London, where he taught at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS). He was Head of Department for seven years and Dean of Student Admissions. Philip has researched on the construction of 'environmental knowledge' for over thirty years, most recently in relation to 'global warming', energy, tropical rain forests, and biotechnology. He has published in many academic journals. For more than 17 years, retiring in 2004, he was Editor-in-Chief of the internationally important Journal of Biogeography (Blackwell Publishing), and his latest books are Global environmental change (with Dr. Peter Moore and Professor Bill Chaloner), Political ecology: science, myth and power (edited with Dr. Sian Sullivan), and Royal Siamese Maps (with Dr. Santanee Phasuk). Philip broadcasts on both radio and television, and he is a regular panellist on BBC Radio 4's interactive environmental programme, 'Home Planet'. He also writes extensively for the press, above all for The Times. Philip has a special interest in the developing world, and particularly in South East Asia. He is Chairman of the Anglo-Thai Society, UK. In addition to his 'parliamentofthings.info' website, Philip also hosts a blog site called: EnvironSpin Watch. |

Ok, I go to his website & I find ‘essays’ on things like climate. Read the essays – same old recycled GW sceptic rubbish, much/most of what has been recently debunked. That he’s never done any original scientific study on Climatology or Climate Change, although he may be very clever in other disciplines, confirms to me his opinions on GW are worth about the same as MPKDavies’ – the square root of naff all. Not worth my time to comment on this any more!! |

Professor Stott is cleary a highly educated chap who knows what he is talking about. As does Lord (Nigel) Lawson who spoke against the eco-bullies last month. I agree with what Professor Stott says - the campaign against alleged carbon emissions from aircraft is really about the arrogant, wealthy, metro-'elite' trying to stop the masses from breaking into what used to be their exclusive preserve of inter-continental air travel. As the Professor and Lord Lawson said - only 4% of carbon emissions are man-made and just 2% of those come from the UK. The biggest emitters - China, India and the USA are not even part of the Kyoto Agreement (on reducing carbon emissions). |
