The 'scotsman' newspaper - linked via stotts site above http://news.scotsman.com/latest.cfm?id=3910787

Quote:
Television conservationist David Bellamy has dismissed claims that global warming is threatening the future of the world.

In a TV interview yesterday, the 71-year-old environmentalist said climate change was not a modern phenomenon and has happened throughout history.

The scientist’s views differ greatly from that of Prime Minister Tony Blair who this summer warned: “Global warming is a worse threat to humanity than international terrorism.”

While some claimed this August was the wettest ever, and evidence of climate change, Dr Bellamy said periods during the early 1800s were just as rainy.

“They should check their facts,” he said.

The green campaigner also spoke out against wind farms, which he claims damage the countryside.

“It beggars belief, the decisions that are made in this world.”

Back in Roman times the climate was warm enough to grow grapes for as far north as Peterborough.

I'll start to worry when the Bordeaux growers start to complain about wine exports from Northamptonshire.

Yup. Then it got a bit colder - "mini Ice age, dickensian winters" and now it's warming up a little again.

I'm amazed you can remember that far back, where I live this year I've planted a complete field of orange and lemon plants, the frost killed them in the first week but I did try, anyway if the frost hadn't got them they would have been gone the next week when the local hunt ran all over the place

Peronally, i belive global warming IS caused by unregulated factories and un-nessicary SUV's, but thats hardly the point, what we do know is that flash floods and hurricanes ARE getting more common, and that the polar ice caps (plus the ice on greenland) ARE shrinking, and governments of the world need to get organised and think what they are going to do about it!. Not that i need worry because i live on a "Fen island", which was high and dry years ago when the fens where flooded, so if the global water level rises enough to overcome the fenland drainage systems i'll just buy a jetski. And laugh at Tesco's because the Ely store will be underwater, heh

Oh, where to start.........?

SUV's. Tut tut. Brainwashed by this one already Mr Felney? ALL vehicles in common use exude various nasties, to a greater or lesser degree. By definition, an SUV is a fairly modern vehicle type (not counting ancient Range rovers) and accordingly have good engine management, CATs and reasonable MPG. So what is your logic for picking on SUV's over, say, an 8 year old fiesta? Please provide supporting data.

As for flash floods and hurricanes - how do you know? You know because you have been told, since I doubt you have personally been globally researching these subjects for a long period. YOU have been told, again, by the media, and you choose to believe this at face value, just like the line on SUV's.

How long, worldwide, do you think these things have been researched? Answer - less than 40 years in detail and globally. Accordingly - WE DON'T KNOW - our data sample is too short to be meaningful in a complex system - but of course we should be careful with our emmissions, as a matter of principle and care.

Remember Mike, everything you read or are told is just one persons opinion - question everything, as most of it is dumbed down or selected to be 'popular' by the media. Most of the time you are being lied to.

I know all cars "exude various nastiness", in fact the mk3 Capri or Rover P5 V8 i want to restore probably exudes more nastiness than the average SUV, but they look better and sound better and therefore are better, when i rant about SUV's or cars in general i'm normally just channeling my frustrations with how bland they are these days...

As for flash-floods, remember boscastle? if you have sky TV you could convince yourself that this sort of thing happens all the time, but this time it was in Cornwall, hardly an exotic location with high, snow-capped mountains

And what about the ice caps eh?, yes they ahve been smaller (and bigger!) in history, but there was less people around then, now there are people living in "at risk" areas action needs to be taken!, such as building replicas of Venice everywhere in preperation for a rising water level. And investing in boat companies...

Boscastle is a bad example to use to a west-country boy. Heard of Lynmouth? Not so far from Boscastle. Similar style of disaster, 1952, worse bodycount.

There is nothing new under the sun, no matter what you may be told.

We could argue weather statistics forever on this one... Our sample size is TOO SMALL, as someone else pointed out. However many millions of years of life on Earth, and we only have 100 years of accurate recording.

Three things to add on this: First, if we went 'Green' and did away with the engine, we'd have to rely on animal power vehicles, and any climate change would increase; animals chuck out carbon dioxide all the time, not just when they are switched on... not only that, but vegetable-eating animals produce methane, about twenty times more heat-absorbing than Carbon dioxide. The 'Farting Cow' syndrome.

Second; more heat = more evaporation; more evaporation = more clouds; more clouds = more rain, hence local floods. BUT more clouds = higher albedo, sunlight reflects away from planet, planet COOLS.

Third; if it wasn't for global warming, this planet would be the same temperature as our sister planet, the moon... about -70C I beleive.

In any case, look at ice core records of trapped carbon dioxide, there is a huge peak about 100,000 years ago... no cars, no Man in any great number either. My bit says this is a natural occurance, we're just clever enough to notice it.

I am resurecting this thread from the past, as it is relevant to the current climate( 8) ) of hysteria.

Read the stuff by Roy London especially.
