    Default This is worrying !

    From the DT yesterday :-

Republicans turn their back on the Enlightenment – Telegraph Blogs

Republicans turn their back on the Enlightenment

    Some extracts :-
The Grand Ol’ Party (GOP), as the Republicans are known, has an uncomfortable relationship with scientific fact. Rick Santorum, a frontrunner in the nomination race, has said of a fellow candidate: “If he wants to believe he is the descendant of a monkey then he has the right to believe that, but I disagree with him on this liberal belief.” Yes: acknowledging biology’s central premise is “liberal”. His opponents Ron Paul, Rick Perry, Mitt Romney, Michelle Bachman and Newt Gingrich have all made noises doubting either climate change, evolution or both; only Jon Huntsman, a forlorn no-hoper, acknowledges the reality of both….
Santorum, Bachmann and Perry are completely out of touch with reality (my addition – & they are Nobel prize winners compared to Ron Paul )

….. Perhaps. But nowadays, to get far in the Republican party, you can’t be part of what George Bush might call the reality-based community. It’s a worrying state of affairs: America is becoming an intellectual two-speed nation, with a technocratic, informed elite and a scientifically illiterate rump who are falling behind economically in their increasingly knowledge-based economy. The GOP is increasingly the party of the uneducated: it’s bad enough for them, but if it means voting stupid people, or people who are pretending to be stupid, into the most powerful office in the world, it’s bad for the rest of us too.
    (my bold)
Denial is a defense mechanism in which a person is faced with a fact that is too uncomfortable to accept and rejects it instead, insisting that it is not true despite what may be overwhelming evidence.
Denial is a mechanism of the immature mind, because it conflicts with the ability to learn from and cope with reality.

Both Republicans and Democrats are anti-science but in different ways.

    Who's more anti-science?

What is most worrying is that ignorant politicians keep using science as a political football.

An election year is hard politics no more so in America, every issue is up for gabs, I am not saying it is right but it is the way they do things.

As for the original quote used by Clippo in this thread, i wouldnt worry too much about it, the standard of candidates putting themselves forward for the Republican Movement is very poor, President Obama will be comftably re-elected.

I agree. The upswing in the US economy will help him too even if it is largely coincidental.

and I have to agree that looking at current Rep candidates (Excluding Ron Paul) Obama is likely to be re-elected. There are some worms already creeping out of the woodwork re Romney which are likely to scupper his chances.

Ron Paul like the other candidates does not have enough broad appeal to maximise the Republican vote, there is also the question of his age, at 76 I can see that counting against him people will immediatley ask will ou be a one term president.

Again, slightly related to the presidential campaign, especially Gingrich :-

Katharine Hayhoe is now a figure of some fame and controversy in the United States, for her sin is that she is an evangelical Christian who is also a climate scientist trying to convince skeptics that climate change is for real.
Dr. Hayhoe made headlines after the Republican presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich came under pressure and dropped plans to have her write an opening chapter on climate change for his upcoming book.
“There’s a well-organized campaign, primarily in the United States but also in other countries, including Canada and Australia, of bloggers, of people in the media, of basically professional climate deniers whose main goal is to abuse, to harass and to threaten anybody who stands up and says climate change is real – especially anybody who’s trying to take that message to audiences that are more traditionally skeptical of this issue.”
& much, much more to expose the nastiness of AGW deniers, from :-

If you want to see nastiness in action, just read through some of the CG1 and CG2 emails. Plenty of it there.
