..and indeed who will want to hear what Steve Uncles has to say? The EDPs were split over their candidate decision and would have been better sticking with a campaigner from their own ranks. If you're going to get very few votes best to do it with a relatively unknown candidate who is totally committed to the cause. O'Connor will get more personal publicity by withdrawing than by going on - how very odd?

I smell a good conspiracy theory in this, especially as Matt O'Connor was a member of the dreaded Fabians!

That being the case, then this was probably the most monumental strategic blunder ever.

Yes, but will he gain more credibility or less?

On this performance, who really wants to listen to what he has to say about anything? Why he's probably drowning his sorrows right now!

Here is a what if>>

As it is too late to legally withdraw from the contest. IF (it's a biggie) M O'C was now to get the most votes would he still become Mayor until he resigned?

I take it that EDP have had to pay a deposit. Do they get it back?

The answers are No and No!

I think Yes and Yes.

If he gets most votes he wins. The withdrawal is from the campaign, he can no longer withdraw his candidacy.

If he exceeds 5% then EDs get the deposit returned.

It's straight forward electoral law.

As Capt Mainwaring would say: "I'm glad you've spotted the deliberate mistakes"!

To be be fair to the EDP, that certainly seemed to be the case for a while. They got a lot more media than they would normally!

But now they have been "Killroyed" right at the worst time. This will make them a laughing stock amongst many and push them towards Veritas like credibility levels.

While this is good news for UKIP and other small parties, it is a disaster for the English Parliament campaign. I suspect some heads will roll over this. A gamble was taken and the gamble backfired in a spectacular fashion.
Indeed as a sign of "Heads will roll" - I did cut myself shaving before I had news of Matt O'Connors e-mail (he wrote at 7.41 am).

I am sure someone will be cutting off my head very, very soon.

My wife is indeed looking forward to me doing some DIY at home
