I'd put any one of the Soldiers that actually had to fight above him.

The point about Nelson is that, like 'the Few' in the Second World War's Battle of Britain, he ensured that the enemy was not engaged by the Army in England, on English soil.

Churchill was great. I nominate the Earl of Derwentwater however.

Why not indeed! After all, he is obscure and almost totally unknown.

From a Scottish point of view he has the pre-eminent qualification of being a failure - a great failure - losing his heed in consequence!

Oh jolly dee! Anything to be different and disagreeable!

I suppose Churchill lacked sufficient Scottish blood? However, he was MP for Dundee for a time, if that helps?

Meh, I would have John Locke, Thomas Paine or J.S. Mill above a buffoon like Churchill.

Although, I suppose they cannot really be described as 'heros' as such.
