If I was to pick my ideological hero's it would be Joseph Chamberlain or Benjamin Disraeli.

Yeah, a buffoon who stopped you from having to speak German and defended the freedom you enjoy.

I heard an very insulting song about Churchill and the British the other day in Australia on the radio, I was quite taken aback. It was quite an old-song and I thought they'd never play a song like that about say Asians(which here seems to mean Chinese, Japanese etc.).

I suppose Churchill lacked sufficient Scottish blood? However, he was MP for Dundee for a time, if that helps?

Derwentwater was not Scottish and he was well enough known in the North of England. The Northern lights is still sometimes known as Lord Derwentwater's lights. He was simply a very noble man and died a tragic death in a very noble way.

I like Churchill, however I do think feelings for him and his role are somewhat overdone.

His philosophy in 'On Liberty' is sound in my opinion, however, in later life he took a wrong turn.

But Locke and Paine are of the same stripe and even earlier.

It has been argued that Lao Tzu was one of the first libertarian thinkers back in the 5th century BC.

He was in the right place at the right time. I put the defence of Britain up to the millions of people that live here, not one man with delusions of grandeur.

Not strictly true, he decided to keep on fighting when many others would have surrendered or not bothered. He was also key in getting the USA on-side.

I wouldn't exactly say Paine was of the same stripe, Paine was a complex character.

It has also been argued he was an anarchist thinker as in leftwing anarchism. In fact I think the American style libertarian claim is taken from those made by people like Peter Kropotkin.

I think it was more the bombing of Pearl Harbour and Hitler's declaration of war which got the US on side. Some indee would of surrendered, but many other wouldn't. For instance Atlee, the deupty PM in the war, was at least as enthusiatic to keep going, if he had taken over then he certainly would of kept the war-effort going.
