Ironies Too: English Democrat's Matt O'Connor lying in 3rd Place

English Democrat's Matt O'Connor lying in 3rd Place

Matt O'Connor the London Mayoral Candidate is lying in third place this morning with 17 days to go to the actual poll. The 1st/2nd Choice voting system finally gives a chance for UK electors to show their complete disgust and contempt for the existing and established three main parties, and with seventeen days to go there is plenty of scope for momentum to build between one or more of the independent candidates.

The English Democrats PPB screened last Friday evening made some powerful points and Matt may well be the first choice of many voters. The UKIP nationwide PPB goes out tonight. Remember the message to Labour/Conservatives and the Lib?dems will be all the stronger if it is rammed home across the long suffering country.

The poll reported in MSN News is linked here and stated:

"A separate online poll of more than 5,000 MSN users showed Conservative candidate Boris Johnson leading the field with 58% of the vote, while the incumbent Ken Livingstone trailed a distant second with 14%. In third place was Matt O’Connor of the English Democrats on 11%, with fourth place in the popularity stakes going to Lib Dem candidate Brian Paddick with 5%."

The question is whether he would lie in first or second place? [Joke! ]

In my opinion, Boris' lead is fragile. His PPB was banal, unimaginative and uncharacteristically sombre! Indeed, AA Gill had a piece entitled "You won't win, Boris unless you start being yourself" in the Review section of the Sunday Times yesterday.

Amongst other things, this means that Boris is not appearing to be genuine! On the other hand, Matt is proving to be what others of us thought he would be.

The question is whether voters in London are attracted by what Matt appears to be offering? Thus far, there are strong indications that increasing numbers of them do!

Full marks to the EDP for having had the courage to pick Matt AND to run with him as he is!

Cameron - for it is really he - picked Boris in desperation hoping to capitalise on the much vaunted Boris appeal [damned, arrogant cheek I call it] but has attempted to eliminate Johnson's gaffes and, in the process, neutered him!

To date, it's been an interesting election campaign. I trust that, on 23rd April, Mr O'Connor will remind the people of London how much Livingstone expended on St Patrick's Day previously?

Cassie

I think you have well earned your passage back to the EDs.

And you may find that folks in that party now look back to your period as National Secretary as a golden age of reasoned deabte, productive work and a lack of silly stunts!

The real question is ... do you really wish to go back!

Regards, Andrew

You've posed a valid question!

I am also mindful that your reference to my stint as National Secretary can be taken literally in my conceit, or . . .

Without wishing to provoke fractious exchanges between us, I was deeply disappointed by my treatment by the EDP, not so much the outcome but by the process ~ which was not fair nor in many other circles, would it be acceptable. I am also mindful that you played a major part in those events. I was also disappointed that you acted as you did, because of my high opinion of both your integrity and ability, but not entirely surprised. It is extremely ironical that, having engineered my ejection, you chose to leave less than six months later.

Unfortunately, many of my reservations about the Party and its internal operations still remain. I'm afraid my pride would not permit me to apply for membership again.

However, allow me to point out that, I am first and foremost a democratic English nationalist, and had you been in Matt's place either as an EDP or FEP candidate I would have been saying similar things if I thought they were true!

Despite my reservations about the EDP [FEP is too new to have any!], I am glad that its mayoral candidate seems to be making an impact. Had it been you, I would also be glad.

My disagreements do not change my attitude to the need for (1) England to have a separate parliament whether within or without the UK; and for (2) England/the UK to leave the EU! Therefore, having been relegated to the sidelines (not even the benches!), I have the luxury of being able to support whom I chose! Consequently, I support - albeit in different ways - the EDP, the FEP and UKIP, without the constraints of party membership. I would much rather see EDP. FEP and UKIP successes than Conservative, Labour and Lib Dem!

I want to see English nationalist parties do well AND anti-EU parties also! So, perforce, I also support UKIP. Indeed, as far as I can see, the only future party activity open to me might be in UKIP, but this depends upon two factors: (1) whether it adopts the policy of a separate English Parliament [the aftermath of the current elections might result in some progress there!] and (2) whether it would accept me as a member.

To transcend personal differences, I regret that you and Richard felt you had to leave the EDP and I regret even more the recent acrimonious exchanges between the two of you and Steve Uncles! I acknowledge that he has played a [perhaps 'the'] major part in provoking them. [Why wouldn't I? After all, he was also instrumental in my ejection!] What concerns me, is that it will make it even more difficult for all of you to come together in the future should circumstances contrive to make that even more desirable than it is now!

You know, ALL parties have their difficulties! All parties have their minorities who disagree with the line being pursued by the party. To my mind, it is unwise to leave a party by reason of policy or personality differences. I could bore for England with countless examples of activists in the Conservative and Labour parties who have vigorously disagreed with their parties, but it is hard to find many examples of members being expelled for such reasons.

My advice to you, Richard and, above all, to Steve is to try and stop the sniping! Easy to say, I know, but sometimes the best advice is the hardest to follow.

There! I hope I've clarified my position for you.

Danny, I am quite happy to stop the snipping, and that of course includes YOU.

I propose we stop at 18:00 Hours - 14 April 2008.

Well, let's hope that everyone can abide by that but, if there are apparently provocative or questionable posts, perhaps it would be better to PM the author FIRST and seek clarification - rather than firing a broadside!

Remember, sending a PM first does not prevent one from responding subsequently.
