Romford Recorder 20/3/08
Matt's Vision of Pride in Being English FATHERS 4 JUSTICE founder, Matt O’Connor, kicked off his campaign to be London Mayor in Romford on Saturday and you could almost hear his axe grinding from Westminster. He was once the master-plotter of the group which fights for fathers’ rights to see their children, and was the larger-than-life figure behind such headline-grabbing incidents as the superhero stunts on central London landmarks and the Question Time flour bomb attack on the Prime Minister. But English Democrat London Mayoral candidate Matt is now set on becoming the system’s enemy within, rather than the enemy without – replacing what he considers the staid, humourless politics of the past and present with a new genre of exciting, innovative ideas. His political spectrum seems wide-ranging, and distinct from his competitors’ manifestos. He focuses on the so-called ‘Tartan Taxes, money the Government siphons from England into Scotland, and something which Matt claims is costing each London family £2,500 a year. His party also believes in a devolved English Parliament and a renewed pride in Englishness – removed from any right-wing extremism. Matt said: “I don’t want people to define themselves as something else before their Englishness. I want them to say ‘I’m not black, I’m not gay, I’m English; I’m not Jewish, I’m not Muslim, I’m English.’” He added: “I want to shake things up. What I’m doing is quite ground-breaking and unlike anything anyone’s done in this country before. I’m interested in ordinary people doing extraordinary things.” However, Matt’s “raison d’etre” for his foray into the political arena is the breakdown of the family unit and the effect this is having on society. It is certainly a personal issue to father-of-three Matt, and it bears some of the hallmarks of the Fathers 4 Justice impetus, but Matt insists on a fundamental difference. “The focus is from the children up, rather than from the father down. When families split up it is like an emotional amputation and kids end up falling over. “What really got to me and gave me the kick into politics was the murder of Rhys Jones in Liverpool. He was the same age as my eldest boy, 11 – I suddenly felt a duty of care. “Something is seriously broken in the country and more so in London. Twenty-seven dead children in London – kids killing kids. A third of them carry a blade. It is a catastrophic failure by politicians and our church leaders. Something needs to be done for these kids.” The 41-year-old, who used to live in Shakespeare Road, Romford, and happily confesses to being a former frequenter of the now defunct Hollywood nightclub, in Atlanta Boulevard, has happy memories of the town and it seems Romford has embraced him. His views made an impact on Saturday afternoon where he soap-boxed in South Street. Matt said: “What Romford gave me was tremendous faith in what I am doing – people want it and trust me to deliver it. I got a lot of enthusiasm and positive feedback.” But Matt admits his hopes to become Mayor – above the main contenders of current Mayor ken Livingstone and the Conservatives’ Boris Johnson – will be “one hell of a battle”. He has already laid down the gauntlet (both metaphorically and physically) to Mr Livingstone. Matt said: “I’ve challenged Ken to a good old-fashioned joust – how they used to resolve things in the good old days, but he hasn’t got back to me...” ENDS
