The only thing which might stop Scottish independence is Brown's ambition. Presumably he nor any other Scot could be [what remained of the] UK PM also the PM's negotiating position within the EU would be weakened because s/he represented less loyal subjects, sorry, citizens.

Salmond likes to play at being the big fish in the little puddles!

If he really wanted independence for Scotland, he'd campaign for a referendum on the question in which ALL voters in the UK could participate! As I've opined elsewhere here, I believe that a significant majority of voters in England (and probably Wales) would support Scotland leaving the UK provided that was what a majority of them indicated they wanted.

Funny how Mr Salmond avoids any mention of giving the English a say ~ as usual!
