The issue in the Portsmouth By-Election was the Fire Station Closer
The Liberal Democrats chose a former Fireman as their Candidate - this gave them a big swing.

It's embarrassing that the English 'Democrats', who are a total waste of space, got twice as many votes as UKIP. Probably the electors thought they were the BNP. |

Before the mud-slinging start, I think it is worth noting that the ED's Dave Knight has worked very hard to build up a local following. If he continues to build up the local EDs, I think he will win. Congratulations to him for a good result, and which promises more in the future. It's the way to do it.

Er, before we start congratulating the EDs on their fantastic performance...
The fact, no mud-slinging being necessary, is that the ED vote collapsed (from 17.22% to 3.55%). I have no reason to doubt Kentishman's explanation for the result of this election. Another fact is that Portsmouth has previously been considered by the EDs as one of their strongest areas, fairly similar to Dartford. Another fact is that there were no UKIP candidates in the 2006 & 2007 local elections so regrettably UKIP is operating from a lower base as compared to areas such as Hartlepool. Yes, there was a UKIP candidate in a local by-election last year. She, the same Ms Essery beat the ED candidate whose parties vote share halved from where it was earlier in the year. I hope Mr Knight will take your advice Andrew so that the developing local UKIP presence will be increasingly seen as the credible alternative to LibLabCon. |

Its actualy sad to still keep seeing these low votes from the EDP, I wish I wouldn't be able to say that.
Though yes a ward where the Lib dems win is an odd ward? The EDP are good enough to be beating UKIP, this is evident, but both parties would benifit by being more radical, hence this is where the BNP come from politically and it is common for them to beat both EDP and UKIP in elections, and they are now winning and comming very close to winning in many elections. Just my point of view.
